You can also do the same with the back panel.? On both, I'll assume that 'lower left' means as looking at the front of the case for the front panel, and looking at the back of the case for the back panel.

Re: Receiver comparison

Having a passing familiarity with the inner-workings of the FT-817, one of the problems with it is that its AGC is not well-designed.

Unlike most AGCs, the time constant appears to be different for weak signals (<S9) than above, but this has to do with the unfortunate "volts/dB" curve of the AGC control voltage: For weaker signals, it is reasonable, but for strong signals a small change in voltage = more dB. The net effect of this is that the AGC seems to be inconsistent in the manner described.

When I use my FT-817 - particularly on a busy or noisy band - I make use of the attenuator to keep the S-meter in the "lower half" (<S9). In this way, one avoids the de-facto audio compression that seems to occur when the AGC is in its upper range where the time constant - even on "slow" - is faster than what one would ever choose intentionally.

Interestingly, I've not see this AGC problem discussed much as its cause isn't immediately obvious and I have not ever seen any attempted fixes but it does explain the sometimes "heavy" sound attributed to this radio. If nothing else it can serve as a cautionary tale to someone designing their own AGC loop.

While looking at the diagram again it occurred to me that if Q14 was shorted, the power supply would get
2.2 + 10 Ohm load and that would draw almost 1 amp from a 12V power supply.

Please check Q14 collector to emitter continuity with the power off.

Re: low power out bitx40 v3

If the gate get too much +ve bias then the IRF will conduct too much current till it blows.

Replace the final IRF and see.

Re: It stopped transmitting

If the final bias adjust preset is untouched then the IRF may have failed.

Check the voltage on the left side gate pin of IRF (facing you) it should be a small value,

If it all works fine and you're happy with it, that's fine. But just FYI...

The 27MHz crystal in the QRP Labs Si5351A Synth kit usually oscillates between 27.003 and 27.005. I have never heard a case of it oscillating as high as 27.0105. To be absolutely correct what you would need to do is adjust the programmed IF frequency to the actual BFO frequency of your BITX40. You probably entered "IF Offset" parameter "-012,000,000" but in reality the actual BFO frequency of your BITX40 will be a kHz or more lower than that. So what you have done by setting such a high "Ref Freq" parameter (27.0105) is cancelled out the error in the IF you entered. But the cancellation will only be perfect at one particular frequency.?

It's not important - because the BITX40 only operates over a narrow frequency range anyway. I'm just saying, to really be technically perfect one should adjust the BFO frequency as well as the 27MHz Ref Freq. But I know that is not necessarily easy if you are doing it by listening to a known station frequency.
