Re: Shipping date zbitx

I should have clarified, I am feeling frustrated that after everything was ready two months ago, we have been unable to ship it at all.
Hopefully now that the production line is fully working, we shall be able to ship all the orders and take new orders to ship ex-stock too.

Re: Shipping date zbitx

Guys, I know it is very frustrating. There were too many setbacks ranging from display shortages, chinese new year and my stupidities. As a result, it was impossible to predict when we would be done.
We are not small enough that we could get the parts from second line dealers, nor big enough to talk directly with the distributors.
But we are almost done with everything. Shipping starts on Monday. We will provide more details , pictures today.

Re: Looking for the V2 Hardware Upgrade Info

I don't have the document, but it was basically to put in the diodes that you can read about in slide #15 of this talk:

There are other "gotchas" however, so might consider this list:

Looking for the V2 Hardware Upgrade Info

There was once a document sent out to owners that provided information on upgrading the V2 PCB to prevent MOSFET failure of the IRFZ24Ns, etc.
?
Could someone send me a copy or provide on the wiki?

Thanks

Re: uBITx v3 upgrade

Hi Fred,
?
The best source for uBiTx info that I know of is:
?
To truly reach v6 status, the layout of the mainboard needs to be changed to correct the LPF bleed-through issues.? Some fixes have worked for others on the site.? Upgrading the TFT display is more challenging.? You might find an update in the group files or wiki.? I think the most used display upgrade is to the Nextion display, which is a step above the v6 display.? The Nextion upgrade is listed on the site.
?
?
As you have mentioned, some of the information is old.? Most are still applicable.
?
Fixes that I know of:
1 - Spectral purity:
? - replace the LPF relays to reduce harmonics
? - Change inductors between the two IFs to eliminate spurs above 20 meters.
2 - repair the Audio chip (if needed)
?
3 - Add Nextion display:
4 - Flatten out power across bands:
?
You can then expand on the v6 to add AGC, an S-Meter, and a CW audio filter, available elsewhere on the web.
?
I would only do the above if you want to learn more about the radio.? If you do not have the parts in your spare bin, you could spend close to $209 on a new V6.?
?
AmteurRadioKits sells a new Micro Bitx v5 with enclosure, less the display, for $99
?
It may be challenging to find a case that matches the Nextion 2.8" screen, but there is a 5" display case that requires adding another 5Volt source for the larger display.

That’s a pretty heavy lift, Fred. Are you sure you couldn’t just use it the way it is? ?Maybe with some external band pass filters to be cleaner?

Some improvements aren’t worth the effort

I have a ubitx ?somewhere with the relay mods and it probably still works!!?

My 2 cents

i have an asus router, it gives few options to do vpn. i selected openvpn that is free. also it gives a dns tool so i don't have to remember the ip.? nice to know what you use for an alternative method. i watched this video to see how you do it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olFVgvwjve0

Re: Bob Larkin, W7PUA, has built a new radio!

Ashar,

Thank you for letting us know about this project from Bob.? It looks interesting.

I first figured out how those latching relays work when looking at the Elecraft T1 antenna tuner schematics.? In that case, there were many relays, with one side of each coil going to an individual microcontroller pin and the other side of all the relays tied together, with a single capacitor to ground tied to that same point.

It took me a little bit to figure out how it was able to turn certain relays on or off without affecting the others.? I don't know who originally came up with that method, but it was someone smarter than me.

Here is that part of the schematic from the T1 manual:

Ok, about the relay first, You will realize that it is a latching relay with a single coil. So?

1. if there is no current through it, it stays in whichever state it is (on or off)
2. If you pump current in one direction through the coil it gets latched on. If you remove the current the relay continues to remain on.
3. If you pump the current in the other direction through the coil, the latch comes off, if you remove the current the relay continues to be off

This kind of relay usually needs?an ability to swing voltage on both sides of the latch to?pass current in both directions.?

In this genius work, There is a capacitor at one end of the relay (lets call that end of the latching coil as A). Let's imagine that the?capacitor is discharged and the other end of the coild?(Let's say B) is also low. Nothing happens.

Next, the B end is pull high (like a regular relay). The capacitor being dischraged?allows the current to flow from B->A , latching the relay on. The capacitor eventually charges to the high voltage and no more current flows through the relay.?

Now, when the B end is pulled down, the capacitor at A end of the relay coil discharges, reversing the current flow, turning the relay off, the current continues to flow until the capacitor is discharged, then no more current flows!

About the driver amplifier,

it provides 20 db gain without a trifilar transformer. This works even with the 2N2222 all the way to 14 MHz. Of course, the 2N2222 won't handle this large a current. We have used this in the zbitx.

Re: Shipping date zbitx

Hey guys,

whatever has come up that’s delaying the shipment of the zbitx—I think everyone will understand! But there are 250 people waiting, and you’re not giving us any updates. They were supposed to be shipped this week—maybe that’s not happening? No problem, but please talk to us! Give us some info. Let us be part of the process. What’s the issue? Are there difficulties with ordering parts? Is assembly taking longer? Is it the programming?

?

This isn’t meant to be harsh, but I think we, the 250 people who ordered and paid, deserve to be kept in the loop when something doesn’t go as promised.

?

More photos and videos were also supposed to be released by now. We’re all excited—please don’t take that away from us by staying silent.
