Ken, you should post on the thread with the announcement. Most of us that participate monitor that thread to see who is around.?

Re: uBitX low output power, received audio OK #ubitx

Another note:? I am only drawing 1200ma on transmit with full modulation (AAAAH into mic), and after adjusting RV1 it is still around 1300ma.

uBitX low output power, received audio OK #ubitx

I'm a fairly inexperienced builder and don't know much of anything about debugging issues, so please bear with me.

I ordered my uBitX and I have it set up in a small pelican-style case field-radio style with all the controls on top.? So far it is all stock and I have made no modifications - I am powering it by alligator clips to the appropriate spots on either side of the reverse protection diode, and the only nonstandard thing about it is that it is wired to run an unmodified Baofeng mic.

I noticed I am getting low power output on 40M and 80M.? It originally was putting out around 1-2W.? My received signal sounds fine on a commercial receiver a few feet away.? After I reset the PA bias and adjusted RV1 for maximum smoke, I am still getting only around 4-5W out.??

I did check Q90, and it does not appear to be shorted - Another thread mentioned that as a possible cause of low power out.

I did notice unusually low current draw when I reset the PA bias.? With both pots fully clockwise, I was getting 390ma with PTT down, where the instructions for tuneup say I should expect 470-500ma.? Could this have something to do with it?

Any help is appreciated.

Re: BitX40 case from The Home Depot...

The white panel was cut from a retail advertising sign.? Some kind of "plexiglas", but quite flexible and easy to work and cut- doesn't have a propensity to chip or shatter.? About 3mm thick- I had to countersink the holes where the jacks fit so the nuts would attach.? The brass mounting screws are just ACE hardware stock, with the knurled nuts.? I first tried to attach them with epoxy glue, but that didn't stay bonded to the acrylic case.? Currently, they are affixed with a healthy blob of 3M 5200 polyurethane sealant which is great stuff.? Besides holding the screws solidly, it allows for a small amount of flex, which, I suppose, adds a anti-shock component to the build....This is smaller and much lighter than an ammo can (steel anyway).? Not sure of the RF-resistant properties of acrylic.....;^)? Aloha, Steve.

BITX40, are these SA traces as they should be? #bitx40help

Hi all,

Built my Bitx40, mostly to learn more about troubleshooting radios. I know a bit about measuring and how things "work" but just from reading theory. Practice is clearly different, and a good way to actually get some understanding.
As a result, my setup and measurements may be flawed from the beginning, though I try to do things the "right" way.

As I didn't receive much when trying to listen to the Bitx40 on my TS-870, I started looking at the schematic and trying to figure out what was going on.

Measurement setup:
Bitx40 through 20dB attenuator into a SA. VFO/DDS frequency set at 7110 kHz, no modulation into the microphone (shorted the pins) except for the screenshot with the 10kHz span.

In the 2MHz span, note the strongest peak is at -12dBm around 7333 kHz.
There's another peak around -18dBm at 7110 kHz (which I suppose is the DDS)
Another peak at 7555 kHz, about -41dBm.

In a 10MHz span, I see peaks at 14.218 kHz (-78dBm, obviously harmonic of DDS freq, right?) and 14.445 kHz (-68 dBm, no idea where this comes from).

I don't have a audio freq generator, will build one to inject a know signal into the mic input.

So, a couple of questions:
  1. As the tranceiver uses SSB, shouldn't the carrier be much more suppressed? Ideally, no carrier?
  2. Is the strong peak at 7333 supposed to be there? That's +6dBc, correct?
  3. What's with the 14445kHz peak? There's no peak at/around 7222 kHz...
  4. If I inject a 1kHz signal into the microphone input, what kind of voltage RMS should I use?
  5. A 1kHz on the input should show up as a 7109 kHz signal, is that correct? I tried some "steady" whistling and got a peak at -8 dBc at 7108.4 kHz and another at 7112.1 around -45 dBc (see the 10kHz span screenshot)
  6. In the 10 kHz whistling screenshot, I suppose the signal (result of the whistling) is at 7108.4 kHz, but -8 dBc. Shouldn't this be much more?

I might be missing something obvious, but have been looking a it for a couple of evenings now.

Thank you,

Dieter

Re: antenna tuner for uBitx

The type of antenna tuner depends on the type of antenna.? L-network for end-fed
or high impedance antennas.? T-network for medium to low impedance antenna.
Pi-network for dipoles.? It is unfortunate that specifications for ATU's usually do not
include the adjustable impedance range for each band that they cover.

Impedance matching is important if one wishes to deliver all TX power to the antenna and prevent? final stage to be overheated due to standing waves reflected from the mismatched antenna (load).
Matching the antenna also improves the?ability of the RX to receive all the weak signals and nothing is wasted as heat.

I have had some great experiences with the RexQualis kits. My daughter and I actually found some errors in the docs and they sent us an upgraded kit as a thank you for reporting the errors.
