Re: Antenna's (HamSticks), battery clips and tuners

I started using hamsticks running mobile and also when portable, but they are narrow banded, especially on lower frequencies, and of course you have to carry a bundle of them for multi-band operation, and the costs add up. For portable use I used a small tuned loop for a while that actually worked as well as the hamsticks and was easier to carry, but have switched to a QRP EFHW antenna that beats both of the other options very nicely. KM4ACK sells a kit very inexpensively for this purpose and the 63ft EFHW works with low SWR on 40, 20, 15, and 10m without needing a tuner and is much broader banded.

Since you may not be aware of the history around this project, allow me to give a quick overview.

Farhan started this project for many reasons, one of which was to offer piece-work employment to Indian women to help them financially. In addition, he was also motivated to create a design that could be worked on and improved my the ham community.

Over time, he progressed from a single-band HF radio to a multi-band HF radio, and finally his current project the sBitx, a software defined radio built around a Raspberry Pi with a touch screen and some sophisticated features, all at an arguably reasonable price. The community has embraced his designs, and added features and improvements to each offering, which got folded back into Farhan's offering.

Why do I share this background? Because you asked about a SMT PCB layout - on purpose, these radios are designed to be hand-assembled by the women in India.

If the PCB layout were publicly available, we would likely see 'knock-offs' of the radio from outside India, and the village women Farhan hoped to help by offering them a 'side hustle' would soon be out of work.

That may not be the exact history or the precise reasons for certain policies, but that is how I understand them after years on this list.

Here's a link to Farhan's background, as found on the HFSIGNALS website:

I hope this makes sense, take care,

Yes,
I will not use EZ Changer, but I will ask where you can download a version backwards?
github does not store back versions. (I have them retroactively on my HDD)
I continue to clone the current one from git and mark the previously used folder with a version number.
Maybe I'm not getting the idea right.

My balcony antenna is a Chameleon hub with 3 sets of ham sticks - 40, 20 and 10 meters. With my tuner I work 12, 15, 17 and 30 (needs tweaking). You can see my setup on my QRZ.com page. I've worked SSB voice to Brazil, USA and Canada from Tel Aviv using IC7300 @ 80W.

Re: Antenna's (HamSticks), battery clips and tuners

They have a pretty high Q and without a good counter poise can be VERY narrow banded. But I have tuned mine with tuned radials and this seems to really help the bandwidth so that they will usually cover the whole band.?
Here is a link to a view of my nanoVNA? showing a few bands and the relative bandwidth will cover the whole 15 meter band, 10 meters will probably need you to decide what part of the?band you will use, like either the CW portion or the voice portion...
???

You can see where I need to work on my 40 meter radials, but it will work on the CW portion so I dont worry too much?about it. I will pull the power back to about 15 watts on 40 to keep from over working the output.
I hear that they can be tuned to just use the coax shield and the car as the counter poise?but I am not using them like that. My setup looks like the images on my blog post here:

Hope this answers your questions. I currently have hamsticks for the 40, 30, 20, 17 and 15 meter bands.

Hi Dave, Yes I have thought about that. I have a small drone but doubt it has much pulling power to pull a piece of fishing line that high. I am afraid I might get the drone stuck in the tree along with all the sinkers and arrows. :0

The pneumatic shooter might work but not sure. What ever Arron was using to cause such a loud bang sounds like what I need.

One day I heard a net control operator on the 7255 East Cars net describe how he put his loop antenna up in very tall trees. The individual describe that he has an airplane drone with a remote operated tail hook. My understanding is the antenna wire is attached/loop on the tale hook. ?Once the airplane drone is up above and passed the

?tree, the tale hook is activated to drop the wire.

?

Wonder if this would be a solution for you.?

I think the control operator call sign is NJ2US.

Ok I'm gonna be a little bit brutally honest here about my experience with a EFHW.?
I got a MFJ-1982LP a 135' EFHW. I strung that up through my (purely evil) Pecan tree. The 49:1 Balun was attached to the eve of my house at around 9 feet high. The counterpoise/ ground wire was attached to an 8 foot ground rod that was installed for just this purpose. The middle of the antenna was in the tree at 37 feet off the ground (I measured the height) and ended at another pecan tree in the back yard. It is like my back yard was measured to fit a 80 meter dipole in, it is 140 feet from my house to my back fence. Through a weird quirk of planning my back yard is the biggest in the neighborhood. The end was held in place by a small weight that allowed the antenna flex with the movement of the trees. I gave it about 10 feet of movement. That was my first mistake. I live in Oklahoma City and it was spring time. That antenna lasted for 3 weeks until it snapped. MFJ honored their warranty and soon I got another antenna. They were out of the LP (Low Power) model so they sent me a MP (Medium Power) instead. Bigger balun, same 26 gauge wire. Instead of running it over the tree limbs, I got my trusty pneumatic? antenna launcher and launched a rope over the limb and pulled a pulley up to the limb and had the wire go through the pulley (Note: My first attempt with the antenna launcher was a little off on the aim and instead of the little projectile going over the limb it hit the limb dead on and pretty much vaporized it and the loud boom echoed through the neighborhood and i got a special visit from Officer Butler, Officer Butler thought it was funny but due to safety I will no longer use the antenna launcher in town. Now I use it for launching my fishing hook way out to the middle of the lake). Second antenna I made sure that it had plenty of room for movement. This time it lasted for three months before it snapped. Told MFJ about it and said that i didn't want a replacement but I am not impressed with their choice of wire. So they sent me the HP version (High Power) much larger balun, same 26 gauge wire. This time to keep it from breaking I had it stapled to the eve of my house. Now I think that it could work ok, but it really needs to be tuned and I can't do that because I can't get on a ladder. I would like to get some wire with a higher breaking point and try that.?
For my buddy I made him a 49:1 balun using a FT82-43 toroid and he has made a different wire cut for each band and he likes it a lot.?
I have been looking at making a cobbweb antenna but again my physical limitations and very small budget prevents me. So for now I have a 20 meter inverted V and it is working better than no antenna.?
