Re: TX vs received frequency tweak help...
#calibration
#ubitx-help
I don't actually do CW -- so I'm playing conceptual catchup.?
If the uBITX screen shows -780hz relative to the external receiver received freq, and if this is typical, normal, and std, then I'm happy. Total newbie asks typical stupid question....lingering question....I hate to ask this actually.... but this means that if uBITX display freq is X and I send CW,? then someone will have to tune to X+780hz to hear me, right?? ?So if two of us were to try and match logs, for example, my TX freq and their Receive freq would always be off by .78K. Wouldn't this be a problem? Or is it close enough for logging? with QRZ or LOTW, etc??? Thanks so much for the guidance and education. Don |

I should add that I have not calibrated the V5 at all and that is
using stock firmware, not Ian's beta v5. I was focusing only on the spurs and so far from an FCC point of view at first looks it looks OK to me. I need to spend more time on it but this is what the configuration is right now. V5 board put into the case I had my V4 in, cover is off Antenna to a directional coupler input, output to the dummy load Couple port to Siglent via a 20DB attenuator Test each band using CW straight KEY and transmit Check harmonic spurs and see if we have them are they with FCC specs down from the Fundamental Have not done any SSB tests yet Thank At work now so will test more tonight Thanks Laurence On Wed, Mar 6, 2019 at 2:04 PM Laurence Oberman via Groups.Io <oberman.l@...> wrote:

Re: New V5 with poor carrier suppression.
The carrier suppression is related to the BFO adjustment.? There is just one filter section for SSB that does double duty for both transmit and receive.? There is also only one BFO that provides the signal to mix with the audio to then be applied to the crystal filter.? What I found is this limitation is a trade-off of sound "tone" on receive with carrier suppression on transmit.? The radio will sound a little "tinny", or have a higher speaking tone, when adjusted to reduce the carrier, at least that was the case for the v4 board that I have.? I used a makeshift signal analyzer to find that out (SDRPlay with SA software).? I believe it was Raj (if that is incorrect, I apologize) that suggested using another rig receiving while transmitting into a dummy load to make the BFO adjustments. You would adjust the BFO on the uBitx for minimum tone signal on the other rig.? Based on my SDRPlay SA, it would mean not hearing anything with a quiet mic, even when adjusting the received frequency slightly to verify not side tone is generated.
After doing the adjustment, The carrier was down to more than 30 DB, and could be adjusted to almost 40 db.? Since it is within a normal AM width, there is nothing in the FCC requirements for the close in carrier reduction. It is transmitter efficiency and the side tone that could be generated on the receiving side.? 30db should be enough. Above are my experiences and opinions, yours may vary. 73 Evan AC9TU |

What to do with ubitx ver<5 boards? V-U operation?
Some seem to replace the older ubitx boards with ver 5. I too am thinking about that. But then what to do with the older boards? One idea that comes to mind is to use the ubitx up to the PA and drive the cheap V-U (50-144-432mhz) transverters one may find on ebay. Has anyone done this? |

Hi Michael.
Please share your test results when you can. I have this issue on 20m only in cw on the v4, where I have close harmonic spurs about 10b down only. I already mentioned it on list The rest seem fine all tests into a dummy load witha coupler and attenuator to the Spec an I am using a Nextion with Ian Lee's code. I did swap the V5 this morning and so far all bands look OK to me on CW into the dummy load and checking on the Spec an. 73 Laurence Oberman KB1HKO On Wed, Mar 6, 2019 at 12:30 PM Michael Mitchell <mitchellmichaelh@...> wrote:

Re: New V5 with poor carrier suppression.
I beg to differ! Sir, if the carrier is only down by 20dB then its not a question of looking at regulations! It is a strong indication of 'something being rotten in the state of Denmark' Translated into normal vernacular, something is very wrong with either filtering or/ and the carrier is bleeding through to the finals or drivers or / and there is some kind of other weird problem produced by the firmware and its compatibility with your board.? Re: New V5 with poor carrier suppression.
Normally in brand rigs the carrier is down around 40db, in your case seems barely 20db. The question is if there is a legal limit to this. If this is legal anyway and sounds good in both TX and RX then you might choose not to make any changes. Otherwise you should move further a bit the BFO, like 200hz and see the attenuation. cannot trust any version or any mod.

I am almost finished with my uBitx version 4. It has the following:
Nextion 2.8 SDR receiver/panadapter (switch selectable with input grounding relay when transmitting.) Built in antenna switch for selecting 1 of 3 antennas. UHF antenna connector for SDR VHF antenna connector for SDR both switch selectable. Built in auto tuner. built in power supply Plus a 5 volt and 9 volt buck supply. Fuses for everything Nice case and labeled front and rear panel. BUT It seems to me there is nothing that make these radios U.S. reliably legal. I think its time for the company to solve all the problems before selling any more units . Unless I can be convinced that I am wrong I will be selling my radio as soon as I test it. I think the advertising for the radio is very misleading. It seems that the longer the radio has been produced the more problems appear. NOT what the initial advertising said.? If it were possible I would ask for a refund but even a full refund doesnt come close to what I have invested. |

New V5 with poor carrier suppression.
Group,
?I noticed that my New version 5 has poor carrier suppression. I noticed this when I ran my UbitX into my LDMOS amp and I seen about 10 watts out of carrier. I was wondering if it is due to a maladjustment in the BFO? The radio has very good sounding TX audio (especially with the IC7300 mic) and very good RX audio.? ?I also understand that the gain from the LDMOS amp is "amplifying" the problem (.5 watts into the amp gets about 500 PEP out). ?I am using the latest CEC 1.12 software Thank? you. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Peter, Further to my earlier e-mail requesting pictures I can see there is a lot of interest in the uBitX, perhaps you could kindly advise your payment details. ? Kind Regards M0IDR ? After serious deliberation, I have decided to sell my ubitx transceiver.
I have done Raj's mods - the 45 Mhz filter inductors replaced by smd's, the new filter in front of the second mixer and the 2 resistors have been changed to increase the gain. I have also added the N6DT agc mod and a TDA2030 audio amp. It was changing the smd's that did it! I'm getting a bit too long in the tooth to be able to handle these little beggars, Apart from that, since I retired I don't have access to a spectrum analyser or any other form of sophisticated equipment. I have enjoyed putting this together - it's rekindled my interest in ham radio, but I do know my limitations. It comes in a pretty blue (Chinese) box complete with a Nextion 2.8 display. The receiver works very well and as far as I'm aware, the transmitter is ok, although I've never had the confidence to put it on the air. I'm asking ?80 for it and that will include UK shipping.
