Hey Terry, I started learning from:if you want to practice copying off the air at various speeds, check the ARRL code practice schedule on the different bands, or you can download the same audio files from here: download them to your mp3 player, phone, pc, etc, go to sleep listening to them :) , etc practice every day for a while, even at slightly higher speed than you feel comfortable, don't worry if you can't copy everything, keep trying and it will eventually happen, then increase the speed a bit more, this also requires some patience, just give yourself time to learn this new "language". One of the most important abilities is to learn not to think about any missing characters because you'll miss a lot more trying to figure those out, just let them pass and keep copying, eventually you'll be able to just "fill in the blanks" and get the whole message, that's the same as copying voice transmissions, maybe you can't understand every single word, but you get the whole message and move on. You can begin copying on paper every character you get, but I suggest you make an extra effort to learn to copy on your head as soon as you can, even if it means to lower the speed. When you get to 25 - 30wpm it's very difficult to write everything on paper and it will eventually be a problem for your speed-progress. I hope that helps. Many have used the tone-into-the-mike scheme and gotten it to work, it has been the most popular method of getting CW into a BitX for over a decade. ?But?I do think Allard's scheme is superior. ?No residual carrier or opposite sideband to worry about, no issues with trying to get a pure sine wave from oscillator through mike amp and modulator without distortion. Take a good hard look at Allard's instructions before deciding it is too difficult. ?There is a 10k resistor from Raduino to C107 for the "CW CARRIER wiring" that replaces the entire tone generator board. ?The sidetone and ptt ?and tx/rx hacks that Allard describes would remain about the same if using the tone generator board. ?

The IRF510 gets plenty hot, a BS170 will likely blow in this circuit. ?Wear eye protection. ?T7 converts the 50 ohms to 12.5 ohms at the IRF510, you might go without T7 is using a relatively wimpy FET, and maybe power the PA from 6v instead of 12v. ?A BS170 requires less drive, so cut back on R136. ?Other big TO220 enhancement mode NFET's might be a better choice, they likely won't blow, ?just not give much output due to the order of magnitude increase in gate capacitance. ?I have my doubts, it's hard enough to get an RF amp to behave with thorough analysis.. ?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýGet to above 15 to prevent deciphering the dits/dahs. ? G4FON program is a good solution to get this done. Uses Koch method. You learn the sound instead of dits/dahs.

i am reluctant to solder bits to my bitx40 board cos all the connections are on sockets and also i am not happy poking around smd components. i am there thinking of the cw board from sunil which produced a tone to feed into the mike as well as a side tone. has any body produced cw by inserting a tone into the mike socket. terry |

If you can't find 100k, could use a 10k pot between ground and the Arduino 5v digital CW transmit output, center wiper of pot goes on out to the 10k series fixed resistor that you already have. Previously you had used a 47K series resistor in the circuit to unbalance the modulator, this was reduced to 10K because the output power was low for many Bitx40 boards. A DPDT tune switch could be used, one half of which would insert an additional resistor in series with the 10K to Raduino D6 to reduce output power to 1 or 2W while the other half of the switch would key up the transmitter in CW mode. Possibly a trim-pot of a large enough value (100K ?) could be used for the additional resistor so the tune power could be set to the desired output power level.
