Re: HELP kinda concerned
Jack Purdum
You're treading on thin ice here, John. I have a Ph.D. in economics with a specialty in Labor Economics and there are real reasons for US wage differentials. There are also cases where women in the US make more than men for the same job. Clearly you haven't studied the topic in depthor studied the work by Herb Parnes and Belton Fliescher. If the wage differential in India is larger than the US, there may be a reason for that, too. I would suggest that that you just accept the likelihood that some work is better than no work, especially in places where unemployment compensation virtually doesn't exist. This is not a proper topic for this group. Re: Probing the Bitx40 transmit chain
So....... What's the verdict? Is it working properly now? Aside from a poor solder joint, what is your opinion about adjusting R136 to obtain the expected current draw and watt meter readings? If I have overdone it with R136, or just playing with the wrong part I would like you Jerry to explain to me how it should be. Especially if I am telling other people wrong. I value your input.

I'm convinced hfsigs is providing them a great opportunity they would not otherwise have. ?Those who disagree are welcome to travel to India and offer them better. ?We've already had this discussion, it went nowhere. ?I'll be filtering out all posts of those who continue bringing this up.? Re: Would someone mind explaining to me how the BFO frequency circuit works?
Thank you, Raj, for the perfect high-level answer! I'm tweaking my Arduino code to generate an LSB signal and to "correct" the "crystal error" I thought I was measuring. ?Not surprising in hindsight that pulling the frequency down 3K makes the signal that escapes much smaller. ?:) Still learning...a LOT! ?(...and confirming that the crystal filter works... ?Hi Hi) 73 Andy |
Volume, on/off switch
Michael Davis
After my toggle switch tab broke, I decided to use the volume control switch for power. I used a low wattage iron but evidently heated the switch tabs too much and I now have no on/off switch. I hard wired for the time being. The volume control works. Off to the parts store to get a 10k ohm linear pot, with an on/off switch just in case, a new on/off toggle or small rocker and a few more odds and ends. I will probably stay with the mini pot (if they have the size) since my hole is already made and the knob has been modiified to work. I refrain from going to the local RS store as they have become a quad copter, cell phone toy store. I also wonder if a different value linear pot would provide a larger/smoother frequency change.? |
Re: Project box
Michael Davis
I have this very nice looking box. Although a bit larger then I planned, it does have room for a 5-9ah agm battery. The blue panels are all electrically isolated from each other. The white edges are plastic, so if you want rf shielding, you'll need to strap them together somehow. I did not make this mod on the case.

The first BITX40 I got would not receive anything but garbled wide band noise. ?With the help of all the guys on this thread, I ascertained that something was kaput. ?I checked as best I could all the solder joints and connections. ?All to no avail. ?At some point I decided to cut my loses and order another. ?So I'm either stupid or willing to keep trying. ?The HFSIGS folks are trying their best to put together a fine kit that can be modified and played with, so I'm willing to keep giving them the business. ?At $59 you have to admit it's a bargain considering what is going into the kit and it gainfully employs some willing workers. ? I don't have the test equipment to find exactly where the fault is, however, I am learning so gosh darn much the $59 is a great tuition into QRP and circuitry. ?I'm loving all the mods and finessing everyone is doing. ?Next up. learning to program my Arduino that I dug out of the drawer. ?What a blast! This is what Amateur Radio needs and is exactly why I started playing with electronics 50 years ago! Mark Underkofler W5MCU |

Re: HELP kinda concerned
Not a big boo at $59. ?Worst case, you might learn something. ? It is a kit, and just doing all the mechanical operations to get it into a case of some sort will take several days. ?More than likely it will simply just work if you carefully follow the WireUp instructions on hfsigs.com ? But some do not work properly out of the box. ?If it doesn't, you can ask questions here. ?For example "Anybody want to by my Bitx40 for $59 plus shipping"? ?Since it takes a month for them to arrive from India, you would likely have dozens of eager responses. Re: HELP kinda concerned
Tim: Aside from connecting the outboard parts, no problem. Not like a full-blown kit, these are tested and work. Both of mine were excellent. Many of us on this site are learning about working on hardware and software. Don't be put off by all the questions and problems, these are people that DO things, that's why we are here. You seldom hear of all the successes, they would flood the site. Welcome! -ND6T

Re: L1 Question and Low output power
Best to use the original core. ?If you are going to use the L4 core, make sure it is the same physical size and color as the original. ?Gauge size of the magnet wire you use is not critical so long as the windings fit through the torroid.
