Re: Unused wires

Hi

I just coiled the unused wires to keep them out of the way and for future use. (LSB/USB switch, S meter, CW, ???)

I also twisted together wires to help reduce the clutter and maybe to protect a bit from noise.

I pushed the pins out of one of the two pin headers, cut the wires from the pins, and tacked soldered on a piece of RG174 for the antenna connection to the BNC connector.?

And, instead of splicing the wires from the Raduino?to the VFO pins, I removed another pair of wires from a two pin cable header, cut the wires, and soldered the two wires from the Raduino?to the header pins. I didn't care for having a splice in the wiring. That would also make the cable very long.

As these wired are inputs grounding any of them is not likely to cause any damage.

Assuming all cabling is identical it seems the RED one has to be GROUNDED in order to activate calibration.

And until absolutely clear I would suggest live with the small offset until more information comes available on the cause of these issues.

Mike,

At least in my case the Red wire ended up being the calibrate wire and NOT the brown. I think the first connectors that shipped had a slightly different color pin out, but it won't hurt anything if you ground the brown wire as it just goes to a analog input anyway, it just won't do anything because it's not programmed. If you Look at the Arduino sketch for the Raduino, you will notice that there are some other features built into the Raduino, such as a function button and a CW button as well as a USB/LSB button, so those extra wires can do something if you want to pursue them, but they are not needed for 40 meter SSB operation. Hope this helps.?

Re: Raduino dead?

Sorry for my german answer to a german reply. It was just to use the red and not the brown wire and my answer was, that I used the red one and that it worked for a while, but when I tried to refine the calibration suddenly I got the issue, I described.

I will try to find some mor infos about the issue in the group.

I will check the voltage. I already separated the part where the arduino is soldered to from the rest, but could get no connection to it. I even could not upload the bootloader.

BTW, besides the issue I ran into, I found it very annoying, that turning the pot during the calibration process is producing that loud clicking noise. That's louder than the station I am trying to tune on. So not really helpfull. Would be nice to turn that clicking completely of.

Hi Ian,

?

You are probably right on this, but then it is still very strange that in 2-3 days 2 ham¡¯s already have a ¡®broken¡¯ raduino following the BROWN instruction. Some doing it properly with the RED wire, also have a ¡®broken/dead¡¯ raduino. Something is going on that gives concern.

Don¡¯t have the raduino, have the BITX40 and my own SI5351/encoder and 16x2 LCD. Testing Nextion display and am close to what I want.

Following this group extensively to learn and where possible help. So are you.

Re: enclosure suggestions

I understand that most won't buy a 3D printer just to make a case for this project, and that the prices are coming down and eventually about any serious experimenter will own one, but for now it's kind of an exclusive club and when someone posts a question about an enclosure and the reply is to 3D print one, I chuckle.? I can just imagine someone owning a 3D printer and it not occurring to them to use it for this project!

Re: Raduino dead?

Hi Helmut,

Please check the groups remarks on issues during calibration.
My first idea was to check the power supplied on the potmeter, middle pin goes to A7 I think. Higher voltage >5Volt may have ruined your port, and maybe still applying this voltage prevents the Arduino from booting or even accepting a reprogram. First attempt beside measuring the voltages applied is to disconnect A7 wire for now.

The red wire is indeed the correct one.

The repeated issues on calibration is a concern due to repeated issues reported.

Re: Unused wires

I believe they are there for future experimentation and upgrades, mine hasn't arrived yet, but if I recall from looking at the schematic the Si5351 can give three outputs and a couple of the header pins were hooked to those currently unused output pins, I'm sure the others are hooked to things that will be handy in the future.

I did not buy my 3D-Printer just to print an encloser for the BITX40 ;-)

As I already have a printer, I thought I should give it a try for the BITX.

Re: Unused wires

From the HFSigs wire up page....

  • Solder the violet (left most) wire of the 8-pin connector to the middle of the tuning control
  • Solder the green (3rd from the left) wire of the 8-pin connector to the left of the tuning control
  • Solder the yellow (4th from the left) wire of the 8-pin connector to the right of the tuning control
  • Solder the 0.1uF disc ceramic (marked as 104) between the yellow and violet wires on the tuning pot
