We looked at that option. It is prone to many problems because the gpio needs to be really close to the codec. With the RP400, we will have to use a cable that will create ground loops.
While the software will run, you might have to add a USB sound card and change a few lines of code to use the USB sound.
Not really recommended unless you have one and want to use it anyway. The present set of boards don't support it.

My proposal is that we isolate all the wiring pi stuff (mostly flipping gpio pins and reading them) to a file called hw.c where we can port the sbitx to other platforms and write the required routines like read_key() or set_lpf() etc.
