I agree with the other Dave. If you hear signals with the older arduino, then your rig is definitely not dead. I would say 70% alignment,or software incompatibility,or30% arduino problem.
Dont solder or unsolder anything until you have everything up and running. you need base setting so you can compare previous to current. Check your if settings,etc. reinstall stock firmware and? get your radio back to original condition. then proceed to replace the display and the software.
