Very weird that GCC reports a segmentation fault, but only sometimes.
My best guess would be memory errors in the host computer.
Any chance you could try this on a different computer?
For somebody keen to hack hardware, a suitable host might be a Raspberry Pi 4.
Quite cheap if you already have a keyboard, mouse, and your TV has an HDMI port.
Or perhaps a borrowed laptop.
