I had used a 50 ohm "T" , a dummy load made of 4 47 ohm 3 watt resistors and a short piece of wire stuck into one end of the "T" to link my RF Explorer to the uBitx without transmitting outside of my basement shack. That was how I tested my rig at first.? I would adjust the length of the whip on the RF Explorer and move it closer or farther away to set the level.? I now have a 40db tap and switchable attenuator that now does the same thing.? No real difference in performance, just more repeatable (I have always been looking at relative measurements, not worried about the actual power measured).
My first look at the SDRPlay RSP2 as a spectrum analyzer is indicating that it is significantly better at close in measurements.? Have been tied up with family stuff all weekend, so did not get to do any more than a quick try.? It does look very promising.
