Curt,
Touching L5 or L1 makes the whole chain unstable and generates a huge amount of spurs.
That is why I changed them to shielded SMD version and it improved matters a great deal.

I managed to assemble the two 330nH and one 47 pF cap on a tiny board, allowing me to install it with minimal effort. Following the v5 schematic I then removed the 47 ohm smt resistor, replacing it with a leaded one, cut very short. This allowed easy insertion of the filter, I have it only in the transmit path to the final mixer. My 40m output is reasonable again, but still lower than adjacent bands. I did notice when touching the L5 toroid 40m RF goes up and down. I will see if other bands are as sensitive.
Ready to move to install Gordan's relay board to address the harmonics.
