Yes, they may be useful for many checks. Maybe a more practical way of checking the TX audio is to transmit into a dummy load and listening to a right without any antenna connected. I trust more on this kind of checks rather than a report from others. This way you can somehow check spurs (eg. at 12Mhz) and harmonics keeping in mind that the Smeter of any rig is not rocket science.

Bill has a good point about lobes, you can check your performance at multiple sites to get a better idea of where each antenna works best.
