Two more things to add to Gary's comments:
1) On some Nano clones, if the Compile phase works but it "locks up" on the Upload, Check the Tools menu to see if you have a Processor choice as seen here:

????? Note the second choice "Old Bootloader". For some clones, you need to select that option, although the default is the first option.

2) I spent almost two hours trying to figure out why I couldn't Compile/Upload a sketch, because the same sketch had worked just
??? fine the day before. It turned out that the cable no longer worked. I replaced it with a new one and I was back in business. I just
??? assumed the cable was OK. I've got more bite marks on my butt from faulty assumptions than I care to acknowledge.

Mike,
From your comment, I can't tell if you were successful or still having problems.

You successfully compile and link.?
Issue is with the loader. Loader thinks you have Nano on COM4 (COM4 selected as port in the Arduino IDE).
But the nano may be on a different COM port.

Using the device manager or the like in your OS, see what is actually on the Com Port.? It may not show up as a Nano, but something like "USB-SERIAL CH340"
... Assume you have the CH340 drivers installed.

Also on USB cables.? Some you have around may just be charging cables (no data). This won't work for obvious reasons, once you understand that.
However i have a handful of real data cables that work great with other devices that don't play well with the Nano that was shipped from HF Sigs.
I had to dig around to find a cable that works with my particular nano.

Gary
