I was ready to post the solution you found and the reason it happened, but you beat me to it.
I had the 10 nF cap installed for debouncing and RF bypassing without taking in consideration the fact that internal pull up is about 50 KOhms.
I will try to see what is the behaviour with the modified software and the cap installed and play a little with the delay time. It seems we might be able to shorten the delay to something like 20 msec.
Anyway I really like the elimination of the RF burst provided by the new firmware.
