The audio you recover from an AM station will be exactly what you get from an SSB station.
It's just that the ham bands are crowded, so the typical SSB filter has about 2khz of bandwidth.
Good enough for voice.
You will recognize those top hits from 1968 on your favorite AM broadcast station,
but it won't be a hi-fi experience.
