My build uses pins off the controller because I had a few of the digital pots in SPI format "in stock."? My controller is Teensy-based so I've got plenty of pins.? But a few people have sent me helpful notes offline pointing out that there are I2C versions of the MicroChip part if you are good with SMD.? MCP4017-103 looks interesting and it's only 62 cents on Mouser.? I am going to try this next.
