There are probably a few optimizations a human can make that would be missed by a compiler, but most probably aren't worth the effort. I've done that binary stuff and if you value your time at more than a penny and hour, IDE's are worth it.

I've often heard from people who insist on coding in assembly, though not so much anymore. And vaguely recall somebody advocating machine code as the way to go if you want to keep it really tight. I very seldom find any reason to use anything less than C, even on small machines.
