I have a 100W 2M amp with that "feature".? Two loosely coupled detectors each
scaled for the same output while in the linear zone driving a LED if the led lights
the input is more than the amplified output should be (likely 1DB compresson).?
Its very easy to make the led light while talking the power up on a wattmeter
without peak capability.
For modern solid state gear voltages are low enough that killing the diodes
are less a problem.? With vacuum tubes the voltages both DC and RF are
far higher.
