Hello Alan,
To my understanding the direction of the winding is important as I expect the voltages to add/subtract in the bridge.
I had to change mine around and I followed the hand drawing in regards to which side the wires enter the toroid, and it worked for me.
But there is something else here as you should not have negative voltages since we rectify an ac voltage with a diode.
Otherwise on mine I get voltages of around 2 volts at 10 watts from memory.
