Gordon Gibby

Hi fellows..............

No, we never got the 12 MHz signal investigated. Tausciam appears to be an exceedlingly CAUTIOUS fellow, and he wasn't willing to do "sniffing" with his only known-good rig an expesnive yaesu.....can't blame him if I were new at this....and the 12 MHz signal doesn't have the advantage of huge WIRING or a LARGE CIRUIT BOARD to act like antenna..... so he never heard it.

I'm not sure why some have concluded that the Raduinio is guaranteed to be broken--- when he was able to hear the 26MHz signal! That would have been created by the Raduino and woud suggest the Si5351 was able to synthesize at least some frequencies --- then he furthered that by picking up several signals in the 4.8-4.9 range --- THROUGH AN EXTERIOR DIPOLE OUTSIDE HIS HOUSE and against background atmosspheric noise and other signals....

Something seems to happen when it gets PLUGGED INTO the bitx and we can't be certain of what. y'alls investigations so far haven't found any explanation for shorting out or whatnot---but it still might be happening.

We're all a bit limited because Tausciam is doing the best he is willing and knowledgeable enough to do and that level is growing, but still not quite able to test some things yall (and I) would like to see happen.

Who knows, maybe I'll be able to do a few more tests when the rig arrives and publish the results and y'all can guide us expertly and efficiently to the cure. I was helping out someone recently and when I finally got to SEE what they were doing.....there were a zillion little issues they were having that had not even yet risen to the surface....when we conquered those, they wre able to make a lot mmore progress. A 2nd set of eyeballs here might help, might not, we'll see soon.

Another thing: once Tausciam has TWO working rigs in his house, and I may be able to add a few shunt options to the bandpass filter --- he may become much more willing to "sniff" using a castaway Bitx40 for his sniffing receiver! I think his detective skills will jump several more levels in the coming month or so. And his daughter is soon having a working rig and they'll get use d to the little idiosyncracies of the bitx platform and be more able to deal with whatever we're able to get working.

Ah, patience & forebearance --- what virtues, and so many times I've not exhibited them!!!

Vince,

Read that, but hope we still have time to inspect 12Mhz before he goes to the post office ?

Just watched the trouble shooting video, nothing about checking 12Mhz. The L5 seems a piece of wire. C103.....where is it....

OT: Last day : switching jobs? If so have fun in your new job if that is the case, if not, sorry !

We won't be finding out much of anything for a few days, at least. He's sending it to Gordon per Gordon's post a little while ago.

Vince.

Vince,
Found a small picture that indeed shows C103 and L5 are no longer
visible on the board.
Let's see if we can identify if there is a 12Mhz signal. If he hears
4.5-4.9 (even weak) that's the only missing signal so far.

Depending how new the BitX is, there may not be a variable cap. It
was eliminated at some point, although still on the schematic. Not
sure what/where L5 is, I no longer have the schematic on this computer.
Today's my last real day so it's all cleaned off.
Vince.
Measure the values of Q10 and Q11 on all three legs of the transistor.
Could give indication if supply voltage is ok at that point, and if
the transitors are bad.
Is C103 the variable capacitor looking ok? L5 inductor looking ok, no
loose at any end, e.g. broken wire?
These are all involved in the 12Mhz oscillator.

Was remark nr 8 by think Gordon indeed.
If the 12Mhz is not working it will do nothing.
Using external antenna is not the way to go. Just take piece of coax
with
PL259 put into the monitoring radio (any HF general coverage receiver
will do, even any radio cable of receiving shortwaves as long as 5Mhz
and 12Mhz are on it).
Extend the other end of the cabling near the Raduino board. A short
piece of inner cabling from the coax made blank. 3-5 cm (1-2 inch)
open and not connected to the braid. You should be able to hear 12Mhz
and 4.5-4.9Mhz clearly on the received. If one of them is missing,
you found the cause of the malfunctioning, at least are getting very
very close.

We never got that far since we weren't getting anything out of the
raduino, or not that we could tell. It was one of the tests Gordon
wanted him to do but it didn't happen.
Vince.
Did we verify that the 12mhz signal is working, did we hear this?
If this crystal isn???????€??????€???t working we can generate any
signal into the
BITX40 but we will have no luck receiving anything as there will me
nothing to mix with.

C6 is indeed supplying the dds signal to the bitx40. Clk1 is unused
and not doing anything in this radio. uBitx probably will use this.
You still have L4 on your board where the bitx40 is connected to the
DDS?
Or is this space already empty on the newer boards?
If you hear the 4.5-4.9 signal how close is the antenna cabling into
your monitoring radio away from the DDS board? Does nearing (NOT
touching) the DDS board increase the signal?
Still the C6 is a concern in
soldering???????€??????????????€???????leaving very little wire to
act as an antenne to receive the 4.5-4.9 signal into the monitoring
radio.
Could you post a picture of the display so we can see where the
display is stating the receive frequency on the BITX40. Assume 7-7.4
Mhz.

Tausciam,
Would you be able to inspect the bottom of where the DDS enters the
BITX?
So we are sure there is not shorting there?
Or maybe just make some picture of the top where you connected the
connector with the black/brown coming from the DDS board (from the
connector on the back of the Raduino)?
In the meantime will check the schematics if CLK0 pin and C6 are the
ones going towards the BITX40 (again).

And it is not accidently connected backwards (probably the connector
prohibits this???????€???????.)
Something is reducing your generated signal if you hear something on
4.5-4.9 Mhz it is the only option left.
You need more signal that???????€??????€???s sure.
The board is raised up with the standoffs. Nothing can touch it.
As far as being connected backwards, there are two grooves on the
edges of the connectors. They fit on rails on the board. So
no...can't be accidentally flipped and fit.
You can hear the signal, but only if you force the raduino to output
at that signal. If you try to tune the raduino and hear a signal,
you don't hear one anywhere.
