I am successfully using knock-off Mic¡¯s ex-AliExpress labeled ¡®Baofeng¡¯.? These are of poor quality - sometimes the wires to the mic are broken, there can be issues with circuit boards in the mic, or they are wired up incorrectly.? Either test your mic on a Kenwood or BAOfeng handheld or use your multimeter to check the internal wiring to pins.? I don¡¯t like the 4 pin connector and cut it off and wire up to an 8 pin circular mic connector.
They work just fine as a mic.? Audio has plenty of volume but is poor quality on these mics.? Who can complain for about US$3 ...
It sounds like you have a fault in the mic or your wiring, as Miklor is correct.? The wire colours vary by manufacturer of the knock-offs.? So use the multimeter and visual inspection.
It is possible to modify the mic to separate out the PTT line so it doesn¡¯t switch the mic out at the same time.? This needs to be done on the circuit board in the mic.? You should take the earth lead from the main board mic input to the socket, but I have not encountered problems in connecting this to speaker earth.? It may, however, in some circumstances create an earth loop.? If you get hum in either speaker or mic, you¡¯ll know what the problem is!

And one more question: I have read some comments about different "kinds" of ground for the mic vs PTT switch - What is that all about?? Do I need to connect ground leads to different "grounds"?
