Use your voltmeter on the lowest voltage setting to test each wire segment under load. Just put your leads across each one. If things were perfect, you'd get no reading. When you do, examine connections closely.?

Did you try to take direct connections from the DC input socket to both the + and - connections on the pcb?
Funny that your K3 has the same problem but that the internal display does not change but only the external one does.
