You're probably right.?

But I would not count on a $2 Nano clone dealing with 12v at vin.
Depends on what regulator these clones have.
Some cheaper regulators may not be good beyond 5v.
And at 12v it will be dissipating a bunch of power,
if the regulator does not incorporate a thermal shutdown mode it will be toast.
