Good question. ?I doubt it will affect receive unless you get a really strong station, and at that point it might be desirable as it could save your eardrums if wearing headphones. ?There is virtually no gain between the antenna and that point after the crystal filter, because the crystal filter and first mixer have nearly as much loss as the bidi amps have gain. ?Most of the gain in this receiver is in the audio amps. ?With a roughly 200 ohm impedance coming out of the filter, would need several hundred millivolts there before the diodes were conducting enough to upset things.
Shottky diodes might be worth trying too, less affected by temperature than germanium. ? Would take a bit more drive from the mike amp, but then we just turn down R136. ?And for me at least there's another major consideration: cheaper.
