A couple of supplementary observations.
I tried a variety of pots with values from 5k to 500k as a volume control pot. All worked and all worked well. Now, qualitatively, I noticed at least to my ear that a larger value pot seemed to take a bit of the harshness out of the audio. The sweet spot seemed to be a value of 50K to 100K. I have made a note of this observation and intend to play around with a prototyped circuit to see if there is anything to my observation; it may be just something I am imagining.
Also, I tried both audio taper and linear taper pots. Typically I would use an audio taper pot and many have suggested the same. After spending some time playing around with both, I think I prefer a linear taper pot in this application. Maybe it is a combination of the a larger value linear pot which I find audibly appealing here. In any case, I am going to play a bit more. Your mileage and how agreeable the audio is to your ear will vary. Nothing ventured, nothing gained (or learned).
The smaller pot included with the kit, the one with the plastic shaft and switch is an audio taper pot, if anyone was wondering.
