For a volume control you usually want a log or audio taper pot. Since hearing is logarithmic, using a linear taper pot will put all the volume change compressed at one end of the pot. It is possible to add a resistor in parallel with the pot wiper to one end of the pot to change its apparent taper. See < > for details on how to change the effective taper.
