That G0KLA circuit could be quite cheap to mass produce, right in there with the cost of a fuse.
Some RF amps monitor temperature at the final, though that would be even slower than a fuse.
My guess is that with the avalanche mode of failure that AD5YE has been bringing up, a fuse would be too slow.
High SWR could present high voltages to the FET, requiring some other form of protection.
