I actually prefer step up rather than step down because worse case senario if there's a short, I'd only be putting 5vdc on the output not 12vdc.
The bioenno BPS that I have (discontinued) has 12v and 5v output and has a built in inverter to give me 110vac should I ever need it. It also can be charged with solar panels.
