of course, you can install the apps you want to use on the RPi. What's happening? you will see it in the menue and you can start it from there, unless you put it on the desktop, so that you don't have to search for the icon.
The easiest way to install is to go to the Add/Remove tab in the Menu and then enter the name of the desired program. You wait for it to search and after selecting it, it asks for the pwd and installs it.
