Re: sBitx mitigation of hearing deficits / Science Fair Fertile Ground For High School Mathematicians

I have the Shokz OpenComm model. I wear it like I wear my glasses. When I wake up, I put them both on, and when I go to bed I take them both off. I barely notice I'm wearing them when I'm not actively listening to them. They have a boom mike that improves outgoing sound quality a LOT. When I connect to my ThumbDV using my phone, I use the headset to send and receive.

A benefit is that I can still hear what's going on around me while I listen to my headphones. They don't isolate my hearing unless I actively choose to do that by putting in earplugs. (It makes music sound 1000% better, imho!) So I don't get into situations where I can't hear what's happening.

They don't involve my eardrums as far as I know. They use the vibration of my bones to carry the sound to the tiny bones in the middle ear. If the nerve that transmits sound impulses is dead, only something like a cochlear implant will replace it. But if the problem is in the outer ear, resulting in bad hearing, not simply no hearing, it's possible bone conduction headphones can help bypass the outer ear. They're worth trying, at least. I like the Shokz brand, but if you want to use them to converse on the phone, they can sound badly muffled to some people trying to hear you speak. That's why? I got the OpenComm model by Shokz, to get the boom mike. That improved outgoing sound immensely.

The Blind community likes the Bone conduction headset. Allows for listening to a talking GPS app on a smart phone. This is at the same time ?keeping ears open listening to traffic while traveling with a white cane or dog guide.?

You may want to look at bone conduction products from ¡°SHOKZ¡±.

Dave K8WPE,

There is a miracle hearing aids? called bone conduction hearing aids. My friend who is a ham had the same problem . He is totally deaf thru the outer ears but inner ear sections i guess work. Anyway he uses a device on the bone, no surgery, no meds nothing and hears like DEER in the woods.

havent Messed with them but my friend says he can hear night and day from it. He has some conditions which prevent him from going under the knife so the specialist recommended he use these. They work 100% he listens to CW SSB and has participated in pileups and such.

They just sit on the bone, no surgery and can be taken off anytime you want.

They are more expensive but his insurance covered most since it was a necessity. Dont know the particulars of the exact model. My friend doesnt talk about his alot.but i believe this is what he is using or something similar. If you dont want to pay the retail prices of the medical community, lots of items on ebay and amazon that does similar jobs but dont know which ones will work for you.
?The other one listed is off ebay.: i believe its $109 ,the one made in the usa with the creators photo.

The first one runs several thousands of dollars

Hope this info helps .

Gordon, this is amazing!? Please continue to be a rock-star teacher!!!? I owe everything to one physics teacher in highschool who saw potential in me, who had a ton of enthusiasm for teaching, and gave me an opportunity to work on a project.? These kids may not have the same outcome I did, but this will set them up for future success and I'm sure they will always be grateful for your support.? I've been following your posts for a while and while I don't have any major hearing issues, I think this could greatly improve everyone's experience with the radio.?
