Endangered Species Act?at Risk

The Endangered Species Act (ESA)?is currently at risk under a new proposal by?the Trump Administration.??submitted by the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) would repeal the current definition of ¡°harm¡± currently prohibited under the ESA.?

Currently?under the ESA, agencies interpret harm to include damage to species¡¯ habitat. But the administration is trying to change language in the rule to make it easier for developers and industry to build or extract in areas where listed endangered species live. This would loosen restrictions on industrial activities like coastal development and oil exploration that might damage an endangered animal¡¯s habitat, even if the animal itself is not directly harmed.?

Habitat, like coral reefs, estuaries, and kelp forests, are where animals live to feed, breed and to survive. Developing or polluting habitat can kill?prey populations or destroy refuge, adding to the threat of?protected species.?In many cases, species like green sea turtles require specific beaches to nest. Great hammerhead sharks use fragile estuaries and shallow bays to gestate and pup. Loss of important habitat means no baby turtles or baby sharks, increasing the risk of extinction.

Endangered sea turtles require undisturbed beaches to nest. Green sea turtle, Kona Hawai'i. Image ?DavidMcGuire,SharkStewards

On top of other threats to the marine environment, including?stripping commercial fisheries protection in?, the change in the ESA?could reverse critical environmental safeguards and over 50 years of important species protection. Redefining harm to leave out habitat destruction could be the death knell for imperiled species across the United States and beyond, including great hammerhead sharks, green sea turtles and short tailed albatross.

Please join me by writing to congress to maintain, not weaken environmental and species protection.?
Join us online or at our events and help save sharks and protect their habitat.

?
Congratulations Once Again to the Marine Institute Maui Ocean Center for their rescue and care of Hawaiian honu in trouble!? Please view this YouTube recently aired by CNN. The turtle rescue segment is at the 4 -to-9- minute mark.?
?

Note the vast majority of fishing line entanglements of turtles in Hawaii is the result of shoreline casting, where the turtle wraps itself in the active monofilament fishing line as the result of being attracted to the hook baited with shrimp, squid or chopped fish. Yes, honu primarily feed on marine vegetation, but they also have a huge fondness for proteinaceous sea foods when opportunities occur.??

Here is guidance on how to help a sea turtle, taken from the DLNR DAR State of Hawaii web site-

"Fishing Around Sea Turtles
Line entanglement around flippers, head or neck is the greatest threat to sea turtles so please remove as much line as possible!
  1. Call?the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline: 1-888-256-9840 for technical guidance while you remove the line.
  2. Reel in?turtle with care. Do the best you can to land the animal carefully. DO NOT drag a turtle up a cliff.
  3. Hold the turtle?by its shell and/or flippers.
  4. Cut line?close to hook, as short as possible.
  5. Remove the hook?only if it can be done without injury to you or the turtle. If the hook¡¯s barb is exposed, smash it down to easily extract the hook and shorten the handling time of the turtle. DO NOT remove the hook if swallowed. If using a barbless hook, the hook should easily come out.
  6. Remove any line?from flippers, head and neck. Try to remove any remaining line from the reef.
  7. Release?turtle with no line attached.
  8. Dispose of the line in a responsible manner."
  9. ------------------------------------------------
And
The leading cause of injury to Hawaiian green sea turtles was discovered to be entanglement from fishing gear from the latest Hawaii Pacific University research.

Moderated Modern Animal vet recommendation

I can¡¯t recommend a vet clinic more highly than this one.? The personalized service and comfortable clinic was exceptional. And, unlimited free exams!

The receptionist took the initiative to call us to come in sooner after seeing the medical records.? And, you usually can get in within a day or two.? They set aside times for same-day urgent appointments, if needed.

We were just at the Mill Valley clinic. ?Besides Marin, they have Palo Alto, Berkeley, Walnut Creek, and SF.

They run on-time, have a quiet empty lobby, free parking. It was super mellow and really good for my dog. ?

The vet took her time and was so thorough. ? Normally, lobbies are hectic with long waits and the vets rushes during appointments. The vet nurse was also super nice and took his time with us. And, they¡¯re super accessible by phone or app chats. ?

Having free, unlisted exams is incredible!? A real freedom to have peace of mind to be able to go back any time. ?

The membership covers all locations including So Cal and other states.

Here¡¯s a referral link to get you $50 off the annual $199 membership fee. ?

Judith sent you $50 off membership at Modern Animal ¨C a new kind of veterinary experience with unlimited exams and 24-7 care ¨C and thought you might love it too.?

Newsletter March 2025
So many things are happening!
Every day, we're getting closer to building a safer, more welcoming space for both our future visitors and the incredible dogs in our care.

As we shared with you recently, we've been hard at work transforming an old tomato planting area into our new parking space. This ensures no native trees were affected¡ªsomething that's deeply important to us! ?

The parking area will include proper signage, designated emergency exits, and a layout that prevents stagnant rainwater from forming. There will be three separate parking zones, and the first one is already ready for its ballast layer!

?
In parallel, we've been making great progress on our entrances and emergency exits. We¡¯re currently working on our second and third access points and have successfully channeled rainwater to protect the road leading to the Shelter.

We've also redirected a watercourse to run safely within the property, with just 68 meters left to pipe beneath the entrances. All of this is being done with minimal equipment¡ªjust our dedicated team, working carefully and tirelessly to get it done without injury.
One big milestone: our main entrance sign is now fully installed! ? We're also wrapping up the paintwork on structures and gates, giving everything a finished, welcoming look.
?
?
We¡¯re in a stage where there¡¯s always visible progress¡ªand it¡¯s all thanks to your ongoing support. We truly couldn¡¯t do any of this without you!
?
We want you to meet Gotero!

He is a 4 month old puppy we rescued this past month with most of his head eaten away by screwworms.

After an arduous recovery, this handsome baby was left with a significant deformity in his head; he completely lost audition from one ear, and his mouth opening is slightly restricted, but God! If you could only see how cute he is!

He's incredibly happy, so playful, and loves to jump around and cuddle with his caretakers. ?

No matter what they look like, all animals deserve a second chance and are beautiful in our eyes. This is what rescue and adoption is all about!
?
?
?
This past month, we had some bittersweet moments...

Many of you might remember Mafalda.
?

Mafalda was one the sweetest dogs we had the pleasure of caring for while on the Shelter. She lived a whopping 17 years with us up at the farm. She was sweet and protective and always up for a hike up the mountain.

In 2023, we had the absolute honor of watching her be adopted by the most extraordinary family we could ever wish for. She finally experienced a life full of treats, fancy food, soft beds and sofas to take long naps in, doggy school, the beach, and many other blessings only a proper home and indoor life could provide.

?
But after two years of enjoying the life any senior dog deserves, Mafalda was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. The news saddened everybody, but her paw-rents made their main goal to give her the best time they could for however time she had left.

We had the JOY of receiving Mafalda for a visit a week and a half ago. She said hi to all her old friends and to new rescues, too. She strolled in her little wagon up the mountain, sniffed the grass, and remembered all the high spots she used to watch us from.

With the help of her human, she even walked side by side with the rest of the pack for one last time.
?
?
Just three days after her visit, sweet Mafalda crossed the rainbow bridge and finally rested. We know she's now watching over us all, thanking everyone who gave her the chance to live a long, happy life.

Some may say, "What's the point of rescuing dogs and keeping them for over fifteen years? No one is going to adopt them..." Well, Mafalda is the point.

We feel deeply honored to have been part of her story, and we hope you are, too. Without you, without your donations and support, Mafalda's (and thousands of other dogs') story would not be possible.

So thank you.
And fly high, Mafalda! We know we'll see each other again! ?

Moderated Theory of Change & Tying Conservation to Progress

Momentum and the people who make it possible

Thank you so much for making our work possible. We are deeply grateful.

We hope you had a chance to review our Annual Report and read more about the impact your contributions have made possible.

Your gift today will advance critical conservation efforts now underway across Africa.

With gratitude,

Kylie Rush

Director of Annual Giving

Based in Northern California, USA

As I reflect on the beginning of my second year as Chair of AWF¡¯s Board of Trustees, two concepts come to mind: momentum and the people who make it possible.

So let me begin this outreach with a heartfelt ¡°thank you.¡±

It takes many hands and hearts to accomplish AWF¡¯s tremendously wide-ranging and impactful work. Yours are among them, and I speak for every trustee in expressing my appreciation.

As for momentum, our approach to integrating human rights norms in our projects are gathering a great deal of it. We have become leaders in defining how to implement rights-based conservation on the ground and in creating dialog and shared solutions between potential adversaries in conservation landscapes.

Our work in Cameroon¡¯s Faro landscape is an example of this integrated approach. Conflict has measurably decreased between local farmers and pastoralist herders thanks to AWF-initiated teams that bring the two groups together.

, you will be gratified by the breadth of innovative impact your contributions make possible for wildlife, wild lands and the African people.

Your generous partnership is at the heart of all we do to build a vibrant African future where both people and wildlife thrive. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Larry Green

Chair, AWF Board of Trustees
