Adopted after 17 years at a sanctuary! Fwd: Because of You: A Puppy Healed, a Life Remembered, a Shelter Rebuilt. ?
I hadn’t heard of “paw-rents”. Cute! See Mafalda, below. What an incredibly long life. Newsletter March 2025 So many things are happening! Every day, we're getting closer to building a safer, more welcoming space for both our future visitors and the incredible dogs in our care. As we shared with you recently, we've been hard at work transforming an old tomato planting area into our new parking space. This ensures no native trees were affected—something that's deeply important to us! ? The parking area will include proper signage, designated emergency exits, and a layout that prevents stagnant rainwater from forming. There will be three separate parking zones, and the first one is already ready for its ballast layer! In parallel, we've been making great progress on our entrances and emergency exits. We’re currently working on our second and third access points and have successfully channeled rainwater to protect the road leading to the Shelter. We've also redirected a watercourse to run safely within the property, with just 68 meters left to pipe beneath the entrances. All of this is being done with minimal equipment—just our dedicated team, working carefully and tirelessly to get it done without injury. One big milestone: our main entrance sign is now fully installed! ? We're also wrapping up the paintwork on structures and gates, giving everything a finished, welcoming look. We’re in a stage where there’s always visible progress—and it’s all thanks to your ongoing support. We truly couldn’t do any of this without you! We want you to meet Gotero! He is a 4 month old puppy we rescued this past month with most of his head eaten away by screwworms. After an arduous recovery, this handsome baby was left with a significant deformity in his head; he completely lost audition from one ear, and his mouth opening is slightly restricted, but God! If you could only see how cute he is! He's incredibly happy, so playful, and loves to jump around and cuddle with his caretakers. ? No matter what they look like, all animals deserve a second chance and are beautiful in our eyes. This is what rescue and adoption is all about! This past month, we had some bittersweet moments... Many of you might remember Mafalda. Mafalda was one the sweetest dogs we had the pleasure of caring for while on the Shelter. She lived a whopping 17 years with us up at the farm. She was sweet and protective and always up for a hike up the mountain. In 2023, we had the absolute honor of watching her be adopted by the most extraordinary family we could ever wish for. She finally experienced a life full of treats, fancy food, soft beds and sofas to take long naps in, doggy school, the beach, and many other blessings only a proper home and indoor life could provide. But after two years of enjoying the life any senior dog deserves, Mafalda was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. The news saddened everybody, but her paw-rents made their main goal to give her the best time they could for however time she had left. We had the JOY of receiving Mafalda for a visit a week and a half ago. She said hi to all her old friends and to new rescues, too. She strolled in her little wagon up the mountain, sniffed the grass, and remembered all the high spots she used to watch us from. With the help of her human, she even walked side by side with the rest of the pack for one last time. Just three days after her visit, sweet Mafalda crossed the rainbow bridge and finally rested. We know she's now watching over us all, thanking everyone who gave her the chance to live a lo

Theory of Change & Tying Conservation to Progress
Momentum and the people who make it possible Thank you so much for making our work possible. We are deeply grateful. We hope you had a chance to review our Annual Report and read more about the impact your contributions have made possible. Your gift today will advance critical conservation efforts now underway across Africa. Invest In Our Work With gratitude, Kylie Rush Director of Annual Giving Based in Northern California, USA As I reflect on the beginning of my second year as Chair of AWF’s Board of Trustees, two concepts come to mind: momentum and the people who make it possible. So let me begin this outreach with a heartfelt “thank you.” It takes many hands and hearts to accomplish AWF’s tremendously wide-ranging and impactful work. Yours are among them, and I speak for every trustee in expressing my appreciation. As for momentum, our approach to integrating human rights norms in our projects are gathering a great deal of it. We have become leaders in defining how to implement rights-based conservation on the ground and in creating dialog and shared solutions between potential adversaries in conservation landscapes. Our work in Cameroon’s Faro landscape is an example of this integrated approach. Conflict has measurably decreased between local farmers and pastoralist herders thanks to AWF-initiated teams that bring the two groups together. I am confident that when you review our 2024 annual report, you will be gratified by the breadth of innovative impact your contributions make possible for wildlife, wild lands and the African people. Your generous partnership is at the heart of all we do to build a vibrant African future where both people and wildlife thrive. Thank you very much. Fish Feel newsletter
PLEASE HELP US HELP THE MOST Fish, the largest category of exploited animals, are sentient beings who suffer the worst abuses. Your donation helps enable our advocacy on their behalf. Fish Feel is an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. DONATE NOW March 29, 2025 Reminder: TODAY is World Day for the End of Fishing and Fish Farming! There are so many ways to participate, please do! Here are resources to help you do so. (We will again be handing out information at the National Aquarium, in Baltimore.) This past weekend, we handed out coloring books and fact sheets at a World Water Day event that included “Youth Trout Fishing Day,” whereby children could fish a week before the official start of fishing season in Maryland. Youth “fishing rodeos” are held across the country by government agencies and other entities. These events encourage children to torture/kill animals for ‘fun,’ and enable them to do so. Please help oppose them by complaining to local officials about them, and by letting others know how cruel they are. If you’d like information to hand out at such events, contact us at: Info@.... Free Conference: On World Aquatic Animal Day (4/3), George Washington University’s Animal Legal Education Initiative will host “Harms and Freedoms: Captivity, Natural Habitats, and Sanctuary.” The first day will focus on “legal and advocacy efforts for aquatic animals globally." The conference is open to everyone, and available in-person and on-line. Advance registration is required, with recordings of the day available online afterwards. Fish Feel’s Mary Finelli is an invited speaker at Five Decades - One Mission: a celebration of the animal rights movement. The event will be at the National Press Club, in Washington, D.C., on August 2nd. Presentations during the day will be followed with a vegan banquet and evening entertainment. Ticket discounts for the presentations and/or the gala are available through 4/6. (Tickets are also available for online access to the presentations.) Planet Virginia will be our first outreach tabling event of the season, at George Mason University, in Fairfax, Va., on April 27th. We will also have a booth at Planet Maryland, in Bethesda, Md., on May 25th. We are lining up summer events, too. Mary was a guest on the All-Creatures.org podcast, with the wonderful host, Mariquita Solis, on February 6th. Aquariums: The Dark Hobby, an award-winning exposé about the cruelty and environmental harm caused by the removal of marine animals from coral reefs for aquariums, can now be streamed from various sources. People magazine tells of actor Martin Sheen’s involvement with the documentary. Fish Feel is glad to be among its Partners. See also related petition. The “Saving NEMO Act” has just been introduced in Congress to prohibit import into the U.S. of protected reef species taken through unsustainable or destructive practices. GOOD NEWS! Earlier this month, a U.S. District Court struck down permits for fish farming in federal ocean waters due to environmental law violations. In 2018 and 2020, federal courts struck down efforts to establish fish farming in the Gulf of Mexico. The recent ruling, however, does not apply to six projects that had already been authorized. Happy Spring! It’s Lent now, too, when observers often opt for fish (though observers are supposed to abstain from meat, and fish flesh used as food is meat). If you know any who do, it’s an opportune time to let them –or anyone else- know about vegan seafood. Vegan Dubai Chocolate Bar– Nibble Chocolate
Never heard of it. Doesn’t look appetizing to me, but for those who know and love it, it must be a big deal to have it be available vegan. I’ve never had any Nibble chocolates, but got them in the past as a gift for someone (who isn’t vegan) who loved them.
