 | | | | The devastation caused by the ongoing wildfires in the Los Angeles area has extended into every corner of life for Angelenos, including the health and well-being of Southern California pets. The response from animal rescues across the state has been swift, and w±ð¡¯°ùe deeply proud to be a part of this community and contribute to relief efforts for this ongoing crisis.
With shelters severely overburdened in evacuation zones, to support wildfire relief efforts by transporting adoptable animals to our shelter, creating space for the many lost and injured pets in LA. On the Sunday after the fires broke out our team left before sunrise to make the trek down to LA County Animal Care & Control in Lancaster, returning with . Five days later we met a northbound flight at the Hayward Airport, transporting an additional back to our Oakland shelter, with huge appreciation to the airlift by and the .
Shelters are still seeing animals arriving daily as a result of these fires, and relief efforts will be ongoing for weeks to come. These new arrivals now have the opportunity to find loving homes in the Bay Area. W±ð¡¯°ùe looking to our community to help us find homes for the many dogs in our care, including those who made the long journey to Northern California last week. |
| | Free Big Dog Adoptions thru 1/31 |
| | Wolfgang & Bear are looking for homes locally after being transported from Southern California. |
| Thanks to a generous donor we were able to waive adoption fees for all dogs and puppies last week, with 32 pups going to new homes. Thanks to additional sponsorship ·É±ð¡¯±ô±ô be offering free adoptions for large dogs and all dogs transported in from Southern California, through the end of the month.
Even with our adoption success last week we have many dogs in our care, and more animals coming in from our municipal partners every day. Our dedicated staff are on hand to match you with the perfect companion for your personality, lifestyle, and home. Check out all our available friends by clicking the button below.
Not ready to adopt? Please share, like, and spread the word. |
| | | | | Not ready to adopt but want to do your part in this challenging time? is hugely helpful in supporting our efforts to take in more animals. We especially need fosters to host large dogs as these dogs are often overlooked for adoption and experience longer than average shelter stays.
Take a dog on a hike or fun outing, host them for a sleepover, or bring them home for an extended stay if you¡¯re able. Every foster volunteer has an impact on animal well-being, as time away from shelter stressors improves dogs moods, and helps us determine the best adoption plan for them.
Our foster program is flexible and dynamic. You tell us what works for you, and ·É±ð¡¯±ô±ô connect you with an animal that meets your lifestyle. We provide food, toys, and training so you can focus on compassion. To get started, head to our application and online orientation, linked below.
Coming Soon: °Â±ð¡¯±ô±ô be hosting a Lunch & Learn webinar in February on our Foster program and services¡ªstay tuned for more info! |

| | | | , East Bay SPCA has been saving lives and giving cats and dogs a brighter future. With our 150th year coming to a close, w±ð¡¯°ùe so grateful to our community for continuing to support our efforts and for helping to make this milestone memorable. Thanks to your generous contributions, we surpassed our 150th Fund goal of $1.5 million dollars by raising an incredible $1.75 million.
Every dollar given to this campaign will go to impactful programs and services: humane education for kids, affordable vet care at our clinic, temporary boarding for pets whose owners are in crisis, training resources for our community, leading edge shelter medicine for all the pets in our care, and more. We are truly More Than a Shelter, and thank you for continuing to support our mission and work. |
| | Advancing Animal Awareness |
| | | The goal of the training is to provide insight into dog body language that officers can use to assess and reduce bite risk while working in the field. |
|
| Our team is pleased to formally launch the Advancing Animal Awareness pilot program. Our intention is to provide tools to groups that might not be involved with animals in the traditional avenues we think of, but encounter them in their line of work. Biologists recently joined us at our Oakland campus to learn from our Behavior & Training team. |

| | Happy Tail: Merlin (FKA Torta) |
| | Merlin¡¯s adopter Veronica writes, ¡°When we adopted Merlin (n¨¦e Torta) from the East Bay SPCA Oakland, we were ready to spend however long it took to make him feel safe and comfortable in his new home. Little did we know that 24 hours later, the shy kitten from the shelter would transform into a brave, cuddly, and adventurous little man.
Merlin has quickly adapted to his new environment and is the best little cat we could have ever hoped for. He loves kisses and cuddles (he is a proud graduate of the Hisses to Kisses program) and has a purr so loud that we can hear it from two rooms away. He is chatty and playful ¡ª his favorite toys are springs and feather teasers, but he has his doubts about his cat tunnel and will make his opinions about it known. He loves playing with his brother¡¯s toys (much to Rico¡¯s chagrin) and watching birds and bugs fly by his window.
Merlin is a magical cat and we feel so incredibly lucky to call ourselves his caretakers. He is truly a different cat than he was at the shelter. Thank you for caring for him long enough that he was able to make his way to us. We couldn¡¯t imagine a better cat to complete our family and never in our wildest dreams would we have predicted that Torta from the SPCA would turn into Merlin the Brave. Our promise is that he will never know a single day without love. He is a changed cat. To be loved is to be changed.¡±
Did you adopt from one of our locations? We¡¯d love to hear your story! Share your Happy Tail with our team, so we can share your joy with our community! |

Frosted Faces: We're nearing a new record!
San Diego Senior Dog Rescue helping LA people & pets.? They even have a few cats! Please foster, adopt, and/or donate, if you¡¯re able.
This year didn't quite start as expected.
Typically in January we experience a lull in adoptions and accommodate an increase of pets surrendered by their families, but this January has been different.?In the wake of the wildfires here in Southern California, we were all called to action.??
When a devastating event like this happens, similar to the hurricanes down south or the impounding of many pets due to hoarding cases at local government agencies, the goal is to move out existing adoptable pets from the impacted shelters to make room for incoming pets. Pets from the fires stay at the shelter in or nearest to their jurisdiction to be claimed by their guardians.
Since January 1st, we have rescued 92?seniors in SoCal, and over half of those pets are from LA area shelters while others came from high intake areas such as Riverside and San Bernardino counties. It is only possible to move this many pets through the shelter system thanks to fosters and adopters opening their homes, considering we only have 38 kennels here on-site.?We are so grateful to all of you who are showing up for these pets!
|
|
Meanwhile, Pasadena Humane Society was tasked with caring for many of the displaced pets and needed to provide extensive medical care. We wanted to do more to help.?In addition to transferring pets out of LA county, we donated $10,000 to further necessary care at Pasadena Humane Society. Thank you for putting us in a position to be able to give back!
As we close out the month, we have an exciting goal in sight! W±ð¡¯°ùe just 8 seniors away from reaching a milestone¡ªrescuing 100 Frosted Faces in one month! This would be a first for us, and w±ð¡¯°ùe so close. Let¡¯s work together to send at least 8 more Frosted Faces into foster care¡ªchances are, ·É±ð¡¯±ô±ô save even more. This will help us continue to relieve the pressure on LA shelters and give these deserving seniors a second chance. !
See you soon and thank you!

|
|
We have new drop-in hours Monday-Sunday, 10:00am-3:00pm, to give you a greater opportunity?to help.?You can bring your own pets for introductions, too!?

Historic Agreement Helps Tule Elk |
The Center for Biological Diversity and allies just with the National Park Service and livestock operators, retiring all dairy ranches and three-quarters of private commercial beef cattle operations at California¡¯s Point Reyes National Seashore, home to majestic native tule elk. The Park Service has revised its Point Reyes management plan to prioritize conservation and let tule elk roam freely, multiplying without a population cap.
?
W±ð¡¯°ùe on a roll . The agreement comes only weeks after our last major tule elk victory: freeing Point Reyes¡¯ largest herd from a 2-mile fence that was causing mass deaths.
? ¡°I¡¯m looking forward to the improved management approach for natural ecosystems that this agreement can usher in,¡± said the Center¡¯s Jeff Miller. ¡°This is a historic opportunity to expand elk herds, restore coastal prairie habitats, and protect endangered species.¡± |

Manatees Forsaken in Florida |
Despite a devastating die-off, this week the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to upgrade Florida manatees¡¯ Endangered Species Act status from threatened to endangered. Over the past few years, more than 2,000 have starved to death as water pollution decimated their seagrass supply. The Service initially announced it might increase their protection ¡ª but its new decision reverses course.
? The good news? In that same decision, it did propose to protect Puerto Rico¡¯s Antillean manatees as endangered. ?
In 2017 the Service ignored conservation groups¡¯ warnings and ¡°downlisted¡± West Indian manatees ¡ª manatees in both Florida and Puerto Rico ¡ª to threatened. °Â±ð¡¯±ô±ô keep fighting to get the Florida subspecies properly protected. ?

Tribes Win Two New California National Monuments |
Thanks to years of tireless work by Tribal advocates ¡ª with the backing of allies like the Center and you supporters ¡ª President Biden just created , preserving diverse landscapes that are important habitats for critically endangered wildlife.
? In Northern California the S¨¢tt¨ªtla Highlands National Monument covers a landscape of forests and waterways sacred to the Pit River Tribe and home to Pacific fishers and northern spotted owls. ? In Southern California Chuckwalla National Monument includes lands sacred to five groups of Native peoples that harbor wildlife the Center has defended for decades ¡ª including bighorn sheep, desert tortoises, desert kit foxes, and the monument¡¯s namesake lizards. |

LA Fires and the Dangerous Spread of Disinformation? |
As Angelenos and their allies work to quench the flames, everyone who cares about the planet must grapple with another threat sparked by the Los Angeles wildlfires: anti-environmental disinformation.? ?
A chorus of voices from the right ¡ª including those of Donald Trump and Elon Musk ¡ª are wrongly blaming the disaster on environmental regulations and protections, including and . One of the dangerous falsehoods they¡¯re peddling is that protecting those natural resources directly led to the devastation in Los Angeles.??
? Since you¡¯re reading this, you probably already know that¡¯s a lie and why it¡¯s a lie. Protecting ecosystems also protects people. Humans aren¡¯t separate from the wild ¡ª w±ð¡¯°ùe connected to it and part of an intricate, delicate web of life.?? ?
The real reasons for the California conflagration are complex and longstanding. You can learn about them in the Center¡¯s report about how to make better land-use decisions and reduce threats to communities posed by climate-fueled wildfires.??? ? For all those personally affected by the fires, our hearts are with you. |

Center Op-Ed: Wild Oklahoma at Risk |
In a beautiful, biodiverse corner of southeast Oklahoma live dozens of species, from mussels and bats to reptiles and fish, writes the Center¡¯s Tara Zuardo with Oklahoman Seth Willyard in .
? But this unique place is threatened by a hydropower project that would flood 1,500 acres of habitat, imperil protected species, and harm local communities ¡ª despite the objections of state, local, and Tribal leaders. The project would likely even wipe out the Ouachita rock pocketbook mussel, a species dear to the Choctaw Nation. ? Last week the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission rejected the study proposal behind the project, citing its many deficiencies. That¡¯s the first step in defeating the project. Now the company backing it has until Feb. 7 to file a new study proposal ¡ª or the project can¡¯t advance. °Â±ð¡¯±ô±ô keep the pressure on.

Revelator: National Parks Are for Bighorns |
Fifty years ago bighorn sheep had disappeared from the Colorado National Monument, wiped out in much of the Southwest by hunting and livestock diseases. They were reintroduced to the monument in the 1980s. Then, during the pandemic, their populations soared without people around to disturb them. ?
Now people have returned ¡ª and bighorns are suffering. ?
And if you don¡¯t already, for more wildlife and conservation news.

That¡¯s Wild: Part Animal, Part Vegetable |
, or Costasiella kuroshimae ¡ª nicknamed ¡°leaf sheep¡± or ¡°sheep slugs¡± ¡ª are tiny, shell-less gastropod mollusks who indirectly perform photosynthesis. ? They spend much of their time grazing on marine algae. But instead of digesting it normally, their bodies separate out the algae¡¯s chloroplasts ¡ª plant organelles that convert sunlight into chemical energy ¡ª and embed them in the leaf sheep¡¯s own tissues. ? With their little dark eyes and wavy horn-like ¡°rhinophores¡± poking from the tops of their heads, they're surely the cutest photosynthetic animals out there. ?

Scroll till you see ¡°Elias¡¯?Stand¡±. It lets you view the 10 minute moving film. I¡¯m so inspired by this kid who was 8 at the time. He¡¯s lucky his parents were so supportive. I looked up the sanctuary and sadly, it seems closed since 2018.

Looks delicious. Will have to try it. Thanks for posting.

Los Angeles Wildfires | Best Friends Animal Society - Save Them All
Best Friends is one of my fav groups. I have visited their main campus in southern Utah a few times, very impressive!
They have a satellite branch in LA, apparently near the edges of the fire, but still dedicated to helping animals. https://bestfriends.org/emergency-response/los-angeles-wildfires
