Moderated CA law takes affect today to stop octopus farming

If only the same laws applied to all ocean animals. Maybe these lawmakers saw the Oscar winning ¡°My Octopus Teacher¡±.

From the New York Times:

A proactive ban on octopus farming

California is banning octopus farming and the sale of farmed octopuses, citing concerns about animal welfare and environmental impacts. Although currently there are no large-scale octopus farming operations in the state, the legislation aims to prevent them from opening in the future.

The law?octopuses as ¡°highly intelligent, curious, problem-solving animals¡± that are ¡°conscious, sentient beings.¡±

California is the second state to prohibit octopus farming and the first to ban the sale of farmed octopuses.

Moderated Ricefield Rats Rescue & Other Updates

Yikes; people eat these adorable rats I never heard ?of.? Lots of great work high in this:

Welcome to?your latest WFFT update

Happy New Year! We're excited to share our December 2024 highlights with you¡ªbut first, an important message...

In 2025, we¡¯re embarking on what is likely our most ambitious animal welfare campaign yet: ending the cruel trade and abuse of coconut monkeys in Thailand. An estimated 3,000 Southern and Northern pig-tailed macaques are trapped in this exploitative industry¡ªstolen from their mothers and the wild as infants, subjected to brutal training, and forced to harvest coconuts under harsh conditions.

Our plan includes building new enclosures where rescued coconut monkeys can heal and retire from their traumatic pasts. To achieve this, we need to secure land, construct specialised facilities, and provide lifelong care for these animals. It¡¯s a monumental task, but with your support, we can make it happen and offer many more macaques the peace they deserve.

Together, let¡¯s make 2025 a turning point for coconut monkeys in Thailand.

Highlights?in December 2024:

December 2024 was another busy month at WFFT, filled with new arrivals, crucial health checks, and Christmas-themed enrichments for our rescued animals. Your support makes it all possible, and we¡¯re deeply grateful for animal lovers like you.?Discover more about our recent activities below!

Dodo, our 24-year-old Malayan Sun Bear, recently had a health check to manage his arthritis and ensure he's comfortable with his joint pain medication. The veterinary team also cleaned his teeth and trimmed his nails.

This monkey, who was electrocuted and chased by dogs, also sustained minor injuries to his eyebrow and right leg. After a successful recovery with medication and monitoring, he has been released back to the wild!?

We rescued 26 ricefield rats from filthy cesspits where they were farmed for human consumption. Many were suffering from severe wounds. Their plight highlights the cruelty faced by wildlife exploited for meat.?
Rescue of wild stump-tailed macaque

Sakakibara is a wild stump-tailed macaque who came to us in need of urgent care after being attacked by other macaques in his troop. Sakakibara arrived with multiple infected puncture wounds and slight hyperthermia. Once healed, we plan to release him back into the wild where he belongs.?

Many of our rescued animals received new toys this festive season, helping to further enrich their lives. We are forever grateful to our friend Jeanette and supporters like you for making this possible and for bringing extra joy to animals who have endured so much sadness in the past.

More than 6,000 sterilisations completed since 2023! Our People and Animals Thailand (PAT) team is actively addressing the problem of stray animal overpopulation in Thailand.?

Together, we can rescue more and create a better future for animals in Thailand.?

Thank you for your support.?

You don¡¯t need to use an egg substitute like flax seeds or aquafaba to make excellent vegan latkes. The key is to use flour to bind the potato strands together, then leave the latkes alone in the pan as they cook thoroughly on the first side before flipping them. (Too much flipping can cause them to fall apart.) Once the latkes form a golden-brown crust on the first side, carefully turn them over to finish cooking. For the crispiest result, you can add the potato starch lost in squeezing back into the batter (see the Tip for details). It does add an extra step and 15 minutes to the process, but it¡¯s easy and worth it for latkes lovers who live for the crunch.

INGREDIENTS

Yield:3 dozen latkes
  • ?cup all-purpose flour
  • 1teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more for sprinkling
  • 1teaspoon baking powder
  • ?teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2large russet potatoes (about 1 pound), scrubbed and cut lengthwise into quarters
  • 1large onion (8 ounces), peeled and cut into quarters
  • Safflower, olive, avocado or grapeseed oil, for frying

PREPARATION

  1. Step?1

In a large bowl, stir together the flour, salt, baking powder and pepper.

  2. Step?2

Using a food processor with a coarse grating disk, grate the potatoes and onion.

  3. Step?3

Transfer the mixture to a clean dish towel and, working over a medium bowl, squeeze and wring out as much of the liquid as you can. (See Tip.) Working quickly, transfer grated potatoes to the bowl with the flour mixture and stir to combine.

  4. Step?4

In a large skillet over medium-high heat (or use two skillets on two burners), pour in about ? inch of the oil. Once the oil is hot, use the palm of your hands to pack 1 tablespoon of the potato mixture into a patty. Drop the patty in the hot oil, using a spatula to flatten them into disks. Do this in batches so you don¡¯t crowd the patties in the pan. When the edges of the latkes are brown and crispy, about 3 to 5 minutes, flip. Cook until the second side is deeply browned, another 3 to 5 minutes. If the latkes start to look too brown, lower the heat. Transfer the latkes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain and sprinkle with salt while still warm. Repeat with the remaining potato mixture, adding more oil as needed.

TIP
  • For slightly crisper latkes, save the liquid after squeezing the potatoes. Let it sit for 15 minutes so the starch can sink to the bottom of the bowl. Pour out the clear liquid on top of the starch. Add the starchy liquid to the bowl with the potatoes, tossing well.

One tweak -- use besan (aka gram flower) instead of all-purpose flour. Besan is a kind of flour made from chickpeas, available from some supermarkets and most South Asian markets. In addition to making the recipe gluten free, it also fries better than flour. Besan is used in many Indian recipes, including fried dishes like pekora. Even though I like to eat eggs and glutinous breads, I find this makes a better latke than any egg/flour-based recipe I've tried.
