Subject: Giraffe Thank You's for 2024! ??

Dear Giraffe Friends,??
?
On behalf of all of us at Save Giraffes Now, a tremendous thank you for supporting this?work and joining our?fight to ensure giraffe can live freely and safely in their native Africa for generations to come.?I am honored to share some of the successes the team celebrated in 2024. All of this has been made possible because of your support and generosity.
Photo: Nubian (formerly Rothschild's) giraffe being moved from a farm in Eldoret to Ruko Community Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya.
Anti-Poaching Initiatives:
  • Funded the Northern Rangelands Trust ¡°9-3¡± anti-poaching ranger team in Northeastern Kenya, an area highly impacted by terrorism and commercial bushmeat poaching.
  • Renewed our continuing?commitment to?the Milgis Trust community scout program protecting a small population of Reticulated giraffe in the Kaisut Desert in Kenya. This small but mighty team has also trained camels to assist in patrols.
  • Hosted a judicial training to focus on enhancing evidence gathering and presentation for successful convictions of wildlife poachers, contributing to a safer ecosystem for not only the giraffes but all species in Kenya.
  • Continued support of the Kamuthe Community Conservancy scout team which we established in 2023. The Kamuthe team, located in Garissa County, Kenya,?employs and empowers local people to protect giraffe and other wildlife in this remote area.
  • Funded much needed equipment and motorbikes to allow the Kamuthe scouts to better patrol the landscape.
  • Supported de-snaring operations in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia,?home of the last remaining Thornicroft¡¯s giraffe.
Rescue and Rewildling of Giraffe:
  • Hand-reared, supplied milk, and advised on a young giraffe calf at Ruko Community Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya whose mother rejected him at birth.
  • Built a stable and paddock with predator proof lights to house the Ruko calf until he is old enough to be on his own. The stable will remain and be repurposed.
  • Funded urgent medical supplies to treat severe, nonhealing snare wounds in giraffe in Uganda, a problem we discerned on a recent visit there.?
  • Translocated 7 additional giraffe to Ruko to improve the gene pool and bolster the population. Along with the new giraffe, Save Giraffes Now also brought in?80 impala, 65 zebra, 11 reedbuck, and 4 oribi, in an effort to increase local tourism revenue for the community.
  • Translocated giraffe in South Africa to increase genetic diversity.
  • Translocated giraffe in Botswana to increase genetic diversity.
Coexistence of People and Giraffe (as well as other wildlife and livestock):
  • Drilled boreholes at multiple conservancies within the Athi-Kapiti Plains area to improve water accessibility for giraffe, wildlife, people, and livestock.
  • Trained teams of scouts and implemented EarthRanger, a wildlife monitoring software, across multiple key landscapes for giraffe.?
  • Continued clearing a fast-growing, invasive plant species, mathenge, from the banks of the Tana River in northeastern Kenya with teams of local people employed to do the work as much as possible (sometimes a bulldozer is needed). This kept previously cleared access points open and created new corridors for giraffe and other wildlife (as well as people and livestock) to reach river water during times of drought.?
  • Investigated roadside mortalities and identified?giraffe crossing locations and patterns to inform the placement of wildlife crossing zones on the Mombasa Highway, the major road from the port to many parts of Kenya. Save Giraffes Now continued working with multiple parties to get action.?
Photo: Save Giraffes Now's Head of Research, Aggrey Chemwa, with the young calf being hand-reared at Ruko.?
We could not do this important work without the support of our Giraffe Friends like you.?
All our best,
?

Moderated Barbie of veggie Jane Goodall for sale!

"Every day, you can make choices in how you behave," she tells PEOPLE. For example, eating less meat "is a huge, huge benefit to the environment," though eating no meat is preferable, Goodall says.

Goodall also highlights how the Earth's climate "is being affected" by ocean pollution, especially plastic.?

Makes a great Chanukah or Christmas gift for adults or children who love her and/or Barbies.
They sold out in stores, immediately.

I got several since Jane Goodall¡¯s such an inspiration to me.? She just had a big 90th birthday dog party in the Bay Area which my neighbor organized through Wildlife Conservation Network. ? I only have 2 left.

NEW.? Unopened in both Barbie display box and outer manufacturing box to preserve condition as a collectible.

$120 each, or $215 for both, OBO?

It can be safely shipped anywhere since it comes in a protective box.? Or you can pick up.

Project Report | Nov 12, 2024

Palomacy Autumn 2024 Update

By Elizabeth Young | Founder, Executive Director

Pickles wishes you a most heartening autumn

While the seasons of the year seem to change ever more quickly, some things change much more slowly. But they do change. We have seen such a profound increase in pigeon awareness these past 17 years! There are so many more pigeon rescues and sanctuaries and advocates than there used to be. So many more people involved in pigeon rescue. So many social media superstar pigeons! I know we still have far, far to go in our mission to raise awareness and save lives but the progress being made is indisputable. And it is heartening. When we first started our pigeon rescue, shelters told us that pigeons were "unadoptable". Thousands of adopted pigeons living their best lives in loving forever homes (as companions, not stock) have smashed that notion. Here are a few updates that I know you'll be glad to see.?

Calendars We celebrate these amazing birds all year long. Palomacy is honored to present our 2025 Wall Calendar! Much has changed since the first issue was published in 2013- our name from MickaCoo to Palomacy; our calendar team has tripled in size from one to three; the birds showcased and the photographers contributing have changed over the years; our look has shifted from colorful to elegant; the graphic design from primitive to sophisticated; but our cause never wavers- to inspire life-saving help for pigeons and doves. Is there anyone out there (besides me) who has all 13 years? What an epic collection of beauty and understanding! Such a huge flock of beloved birds photographed and their stories shared, celebrated, honored. But that's enough looking back, here's to the future. Palomacy wishes you and yours a truly wonderful 2025. Congratulations to the photographers whose images were selected, with great difficulty from among 336 submissions. See everything and order yours at the link below.

Volunteering?Palomacy people know that it takes a surprisingly big, incredibly dedicated and generous flock of volunteers to do all the rescuing, healing, rehoming, educating, coaching, and caring that we do to help so many birds! There are lots of superheroes in our flock, and then there are a few extra, extra-super supporters who go even further above and beyond! Whether you know Heather Hohlowski personally or not, you have been supported by her many incredible contributions. She has been with us from the very beginning, 17 years ago. Do you love our logo? Heather created it! And our MickaCoo logo before that. Is your heart warmed when volunteers foster abandoned pigeons waiting for their forever homes? When rescued birds are lovingly cared for every single day, fed and watered, their aviaries cleaned, their conditions monitored, their injuries treated and medications administered (not to mention the 65 miles each way trips to the vet) and supported in every way all the way to their forever home? Heather has been doing all of that for years for her own fostered pigeons as well as a couple of years for our communal flock at Ploughshares Nursery aviary in Alameda. And she created our How to Welcome Pigeons Into Your Life and our Ploughshares Aviary handbooks too. And and and...?Honoring Hero Heather continues at the link below.?

?Pigeon PR?This article is awesome: "Pigeons Deserve Better! Trust me. I fed one." By Anna Mclean, Reprinted from the Michigan Daily.?Pigeons: we know them, but do we love them? Historically yes, Currently, no. In the 21st century, pigeons are colloquially referred to as "the rats of the sky," "trash birds" and, most fondly, "damn nuisances." Sitting on a park bench in the heart of Rome this summer, I found myself unable to look away from the small, gray birds that sat mere feet away from me, ruffling their feathers in the rain and looking for their next snack. Read on to see where this goes at the link below.

Coming Soon? Please mark your calendar and set a reminder to support Palomacy with a GivingTuesday donation on Monday, December 2nd at 9 PM PT. Donations up to $1,800 will earn a much needed bonus match. The more given, the higher the match. And get ready to indulge all your pigeon and dove love with our Pigeons on the Shelf Auction in December! More details will follow soon.

Thank you all for everything you do with so much compassion and love.

Moderated Let's Climb Out of the Trump Slump

Climbing Out of the Trump Slump

?

"Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it." ? -Leo Tolstoy

Dear Friend of Compassionate Living,

?

Trying to adjust to the dystopian reality of having a climate denier (amid an embarrassment of other dreadful things) as president of the United States has made for a challenging few days. I¡¯m finally emerging from the fog of disbelief, licking the wounds of anguish, and clearing my head of despondency. As I shake off the disappointment, I realize that now is the time to draw on my core strength of grassroots activism.

?

I never put a great deal of stock in the government making bold, urgent strides toward creating a sustainable future. But at least, for a few years, it felt like there was some momentum with leadership helping us to push the burdensome boulder of climate change mitigation and animal liberation up the mountain of complacency. But that arduous rock just came crashing down on our heads. It's now up to grassroots movements, and the power of the people, to pick up the slack and keep pushing forward.

?

Trump has pledged to revive the carbon spewing U.S. coal industry, create oil pipelines, roll back regulations protecting our air and water, and kick Biden¡¯s meager but hard fought for climate protections to the curb; policies that included historic reductions from carbon pollution and expansion of the clean energy economy. In Trump¡¯s first term, he dismantled over 100 laws aimed at limiting greenhouse gas emissions, combating air and water pollution, and enforcing environmental safeguards.?

?

Farmed animals are not out of his crosshairs either. It¡¯s unclear how exactly he plans to support animal farmers, but with the Farm Bill delayed until after the election, it is unlikely that a republican congress and president will lead us in a positive direction. However, it is likely that in the coming months we will see the repeal and dismantling of hard won laws that were meant to protect animals, like Proposition 12 in California. This is why we cannot rely on fragile legislation and passing insubstantial propositions and measures, that can easily be overturned, to move us forward. If we want robust societal change, it is crucial to focus on compassionate education, outreach, and the development of vegan identities and cultures.

?

It is now up to us to stand up, shake it off, reclaim our courage, and take action. We cannot depend on our government to heed the thunderous warnings of the climate scientists; it is up to us to save this planet ourselves, one person at a time, one plate at a time. We must transition to a vegan diet on a massive global scale.

?

The current trajectory for addressing climate change involves a transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources and alternative transportation options. This takes time, money, resources, infrastructure change, and critical to our discussion here, government involvement. We no longer have the luxury of hoping that whatever administration is in power will help our planet or her animals. We must step up and take control of the situation ourselves.

?

And there is hope¡ªa global shift to a plant-based diet could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions to help mitigate some of the worst effects of climate change. A widescale adoption of a vegan diet could also put an end to the suffering of countless farmed animals, and would take minimal time, money, resources, infrastructure changes, or government intervention. All it would require is the will of the people to choose only plant foods. It¡¯s that simple. It can be done.

?

But it starts with you and me. Outreach is key and that is why I have dedicated my life to educating our community about the power of our plate and why it is so vital to choose only animal-free foods. But I can¡¯t do it alone, we need each other to realize the promise of a brighter world. Compassionate Living needs you! Won¡¯t you join us in helping promote a vegan diet on the grassroots level by Perhaps you would consider become a monthly donor and help us sustain our outreach throughout the year.

?

Remember that you are not alone. There is a vast global network of people just like us who are advocating for animal freedom and a climate secure planet. Our work is more vital now than ever. In whatever way you can help, let's come together, take on the challenges we face, and climb out of the Trump Slump! The animals and the planet are counting on us.

?

With love and determination,

?

This is a special appeal from Wildlife Trust of India to you and other supporters on behalf of their project on GlobalGiving.

Did you know the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) is the world¡¯s fourth-largest illicit industry?

Thousands of wild animals and plants are trafficked each year, driven by ruthless, highly organized, and profit-hungry trade syndicates. INTERPOL estimates this ¡®blood money¡¯ trade is worth 7¨C23 billion US dollars annually.

Driving this brutal global trade is the consumer demand for wildlife products, whether for luxury goods, fashion, traditional medicine, exotic pets, food, or even baseless superstitions.

How far can this misguided desire go??Consider the Indian festival of Diwali, during which Goddess Laxmi, the deity of wealth, is worshipped in many parts of North India. In Indian mythology, she is often depicted alongside a barn owl. This is true for most Indian gods and goddesses, who are accompanied by a bird or an animal, illustrating the beautiful intertwining of culture and wildlife.

Yet, during Diwali, the illegal demand for owls spikes, driven by the harmful superstition that sacrificing an owl might somehow appease the goddess. This is just one of many misguided beliefs found worldwide, across cultures and countries, that fuel the illegal wildlife trade.

Buyers and sellers are just the visible part of a larger network. IWT operates through elusive syndicates relying on violence and corruption, deeply linked to financial crimes. Profits in turn fund other transnational crimes, including money laundering, arms, drugs, and human trafficking.

In the last decade,?IWT has become the second-largest threat to species survival, following habitat destruction. Left unchecked, this illegal trade will devastate global biodiversity and undermine conservation efforts worldwide.

Here¡¯s how IWT¡¯s impact is intertwined with our work in wildlife conservation:

  • Rescued and rehabilitated orphans: Many young animals that Wildlife Trust of India rescues and rehabilitates were orphaned when poachers brutally killed their mothers for tusks, horns, skins, and other body parts.
  • Threat to forest rangers:?Brave forest rangers dedicated to protecting wildlife often face life-threatening encounters with heavily armed poachers.
  • Impact on Tiger and Elephant populations: Even as we work to preserve natural habitats and enforce policies to protect majestic animals like elephants and tigers, these efforts are undermined by the relentless illegal trade in their body parts.
  • Exploitation of traditional communities: Indigenous hunting communities, who have traditionally lived in harmony?with nature, are increasingly exploited by IWT operatives for commercial gain.

Over the past two and a half decades, Wildlife Trust of India has facilitated?327 major enforcement operations, resulting in the seizure of thousands of illegal wildlife items and live animals in trade, and the arrest of hundreds of wildlife criminals.

We are honoured to share this journey with you as one of our most important stakeholder¡ªyou have made all of this possible.

The battle against IWT is a long one, requiring relentless support.?¡®Giving Tuesday¡¯, on December 3rd, offers a unique chance to make an even greater impact.

On this day,?GlobalGiving?will provide a matching grant, amplifying your support for our fight against IWT. By donating to WTI's appeal on GlobalGiving on December 3rd, you can multiply your impact in protecting wildlife and dismantling systems of exploitation.

If you haven¡¯t already, please??to WTI to receive an email reminder before the event and also stay informed about your impact in this fight. Let¡¯s stand together to make a powerful change for wildlife this Giving Tuesday.

Warm regards,

Monica

We're ready for this moment.

I'm devastated the country chose a fear-driven, morally bankrupt autocrat to lead it ¡ª a person who values nothing but power and himself.

Trump is a disaster for the natural world ¡ª the wildlife we love and the clean air and water we need.

I'd urgently hoped that we'd finally put Trump behind us. His hateful, cruel bigotry and misogyny should have been disqualifying.

I hope you take the time you need to come to terms with this result. It's understandable to be heartbroken. On so many levels and for so many issues we care about, Trump's election is profoundly dangerous.

We'd hoped we wouldn't have to fight him for another four years. But we're ready.

We have a plan, and the hard won experience, to stand toe to toe with Trump every single day.

The Center's been here before, and we held the line and won.

We sued the Trump administration 266 times.

When he took away federal protection from gray wolves, we went to court and got those federal protections restored.

We defeated his attempts to expand drilling, mining and livestock grazing across 51 million acres of greater sage grouse habitat in seven western states.

We stopped trophy hunting of Yellowstone's famed grizzly bears, restoring the bears' Endangered Species Act protection with a win in court.

And we defeated an illegal attempt to gut the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which would have let polluters off the hook for killing birds.

Let's be upfront about what lies ahead. The second Trump administration will be even more cunning, ruthless, and laser-focused on dismantling our bedrock conservation laws than the first ¡ª and will push more species to the knife's edge of extinction.

Our fight in defense of wildlife and wild places ¡ª and the laws we depend on to secure their safety ¡ª starts now.

Dear All,

First of all, a big thank you to all who signed up to receive email updates and have supported my work in the past.? It¡¯s finally time for me to provide an update.? (If you are receiving this email it is because you signed up to do so on the Shame of Point Reyes site, so if you don¡¯t want to receive such emails just let me know.)

As you can probably imagine the Point Reyes saga comes with a certain emotional toll, especially when one is? in the field witnessing the issue first hand then going home and looking at the footage of the damage and suffering over and over.? I decided to remove myself, well, partially remove myself, for a little while and work on other topics, but now I am back.

I finished the shark documentary that I shelved for 6 years to work on Point Reyes and now I¡¯m back re-editing ¡®Elk Water¡¯, which only a few of you saw at the film festival a few years ago.? The entire Point Reyes story is being cut into due to its complexity.? More details on that can be found

The primary purpose of this email is to let you know that I am back to creating Point Reyes-related content and to let you know that the best way to stay up to date with such content is to follow me on .? Sometimes I will update in accordance, but if you don¡¯t want to miss anything I recommend subscribing and turning on notifications.

To those who choose to support me through monetary means, please know this help is greatly appreciated and will go toward my ongoing effort.? I went into massive debt while working on Point Reyes and other ecological issues, but your support will help me stay afloat as I push forward.

Some of you have supported me via Patreon in the past, but I have shifted from that to using a members section on YouTube that you can sign up for and support me in that way, receiving direct access to members only content rather than going through the third party of Patreon.? Just tap the ¡®Join¡¯ button next to the ¡®Subscribe¡¯ button to get started.? I guess I¡¯m just getting old, but I am not able to keep up with so many social media platforms and am thus focusing on YouTube to host my content. ? I¡¯ve essentially abandoned Instagram and Facebook as well so please look to my YouTube channel for your primary source of content.

Of course, is still an option while anyone interested in supporting me on a larger scale may make a via my .??

Well, I know this update was largely about telling you how to support me, but it also lets you know to expect new content and where to find it.? Watch for a special local screening of my shark documentary to be announced soon followed by a screening of the new cut of Elk Water.??

Thank you all so much for your support!

Sincerely,

Skyler Thomas

It also makes no sense to kill the poor raccoon who didn¡¯t bite the investigator.? If the squirrel turns out not to have rabies, then the raccoon wouldn¡¯t.? I¡¯m sure neither had it.? It seems like an excuse to kill animals.? The squirrel was probably just reacting to the scary stranger and not rabid.
