Moderated Pt. Reyes event: Meet the New PRNS Superintendent on Thursday, March 11 at 6 PM

Dear Friends,

On Thursday, March 11 at 6:00 PM, the new incoming Point Reyes National Seashore (PRNS) Superintendent Craig Kenkel?will be hosting:
?

The Superintendent's Hour
Thursday, March 11 at 6:00 PM?

This event will?introduce the Superintendent,?who previously oversaw commercial grazing in Cuyahoga National Park in Ohio, and include?time for?Q&A from the audience.?I encourage you to attend and voice your concerns about?the need to prioritize Tule Elk and the whole ecosystem?at PRNS.

Here are a few talking points you can use to structure your questions and comments to Superintendent Kenkel:

  • I believe the National Park Service's key priority should be to protect native plants and wildlife. Culling Tule Elk to satisfy private ranchers?is the opposite.
  • The current ranching activity?impedes my ability to enjoy PRNS -- it blocks my access, it mars the landscape and we¡¯ve seen higher levels of e.coli and bacteria in local waterways, far exceeding health regulations, likely as a result from their manure.
  • As a national parks lover, I would like?to see?land that is being privately ranched opened, restored and rewilded, as nature intended.

Let's show new Superintendent Craig Kenkel that, despite his experience in Ohio, Point Reyes is different.?Especially in light of the first Native American, Deb Haaland, potentially leading the Department of Interior, our community overwhelmingly supports a return to how Point Reyes existed for hundreds of years before ranchers showed up!?.

Thank you,
Diana, Founder of For Elk

P.S. I know many of you have been anxiously waiting for updates regarding the California Coastal Commission's (CCC) consideration of the Point Reyes National Seashore General Management Plan Amendment. While the CCC was planning on discussing this important issue during their March meeting, it now seems they are pushing it back to April or later. I'll let you know as soon as I know more. To learn more about the CCC and to see the agenda for yourself, .?

to those of you who celebrate it tonight and tomorrow...

I found Mediterranean Express in Berkeley on Door Dash has Middle Eastern and Persian-style saffron rice to stay with the Purim theme.? There¡¯s $5 off for orders of $15+.? The Vegan Trio with sumac cauliflower & eggplant is delicious as is the falafel, different from the usual and with plain cabbage instead of Israeli salad.

Unrelated to Purim, The King¡¯s Feet right near it has 30% off pick-up on Door Dash.

Bowl¡¯D Korean in Albany also has a discount for pick-up on Door Dash with the delicious Bibimbop and buckwheat noodles w/ julienned veggies are easily vegan if you just tell them to skip the egg.

?
Mary Anne, take action today for cats!
?
?

Dear Mary Anne,

In a callous and unnecessary move, at least 18 homeless cats have been shot and killed recently by the East Bay Regional Park District in Oakland, California before they were given the opportunity to be rehomed. The Park District has just claimed to have suspended the program following outcry, but has yet to commit to ending it permanently.

IDA

Community cats, commonly labelled as ¡°strays¡± or of being ¡°feral,¡± are often subjected to needless cruelty and killings. Cats with human families are valued as treasured companions. But when these cats lose their homes ¡ª or when they never had them to begin with ¡ª they also lose their safety, security, and in many cases, human sympathy and compassion.

After news of the killings broke, we at In Defense of Animals ran an alert urging the Parks District to find a nonviolent solution. That alert generated over 12,000 letters.

Subsequently, In Defense of Animals organized a call with area shelters and local animal defenders to discuss the next steps. During that call we learned that, due to Covid-19, local shelters have more than enough space to house all these local community cats who might create conflict with wild animals.

IDA

On Thursday February 25th, 2021, a board meeting of the East Bay Regional Parks department is scheduled to discuss how to manage the East Bay community cats moving forward.

However, IDA has learned that East Bay Regional Park District is not planning to implement a permanent ban on shooting community cats, and will continue this barbaric practice where they deem it necessary.

Without your support, more cats will be needlessly gunned down.

Demand that the EBRPD immediately end their cat killing policy by attending their Board meeting this Thursday, February 25, 2021, 12:30 p.m and leaving your comments.

Members of the public can listen to the meeting in the following way:
Via the Park District¡¯s live audio stream, on the Park District¡¯s YouTube channel, which can be found at:

Public comments may be submitted one of three ways:
1. Via email to the Recording Secretary at naturalcultural@... by 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2021. Email must contain in the subject line public comments ¨C not on the agenda or public comments ¨C agenda item #.

2. Via voicemail at 510-544-2321 by 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2021. The caller must start the message by stating public comments ¨C not on the agenda or public comments ¨C agenda item # followed by their name and place of residence, followed by their comments.

3. Live via zoom. If you would like to make a live public comment during the meeting this option is available through the virtual meeting platform: . Note that this virtual meeting platform link will let you into the virtual meeting for the purpose of providing a public comment. If you do not intend to make a public comment, please use the YouTube link at to observe the meeting.

In Defense of Animals has composed in advance of this meeting, which we will be delivering to the Parks District, urging them to develop and implement a humane, nonlethal solution, in cooperation with the area¡¯s local shelters.

Please sign and share to the East Bay Regional Park District to stop the killing.

We can¡¯t do it without you!
