Mary Anne, take action today for cats!
?
?

Dear Mary Anne,

In a callous and unnecessary move, at least 18 homeless cats have been shot and killed recently by the East Bay Regional Park District in Oakland, California before they were given the opportunity to be rehomed. The Park District has just claimed to have suspended the program following outcry, but has yet to commit to ending it permanently.

IDA

Community cats, commonly labelled as ¡°strays¡± or of being ¡°feral,¡± are often subjected to needless cruelty and killings. Cats with human families are valued as treasured companions. But when these cats lose their homes ¡ª or when they never had them to begin with ¡ª they also lose their safety, security, and in many cases, human sympathy and compassion.

After news of the killings broke, we at In Defense of Animals ran an alert urging the Parks District to find a nonviolent solution. That alert generated over 12,000 letters.

Subsequently, In Defense of Animals organized a call with area shelters and local animal defenders to discuss the next steps. During that call we learned that, due to Covid-19, local shelters have more than enough space to house all these local community cats who might create conflict with wild animals.

IDA

On Thursday February 25th, 2021, a board meeting of the East Bay Regional Parks department is scheduled to discuss how to manage the East Bay community cats moving forward.

However, IDA has learned that East Bay Regional Park District is not planning to implement a permanent ban on shooting community cats, and will continue this barbaric practice where they deem it necessary.

Without your support, more cats will be needlessly gunned down.

Demand that the EBRPD immediately end their cat killing policy by attending their Board meeting this Thursday, February 25, 2021, 12:30 p.m and leaving your comments.

Members of the public can listen to the meeting in the following way:
Via the Park District¡¯s live audio stream, on the Park District¡¯s YouTube channel, which can be found at:

Public comments may be submitted one of three ways:
1. Via email to the Recording Secretary at naturalcultural@... by 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2021. Email must contain in the subject line public comments ¨C not on the agenda or public comments ¨C agenda item #.

2. Via voicemail at 510-544-2321 by 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2021. The caller must start the message by stating public comments ¨C not on the agenda or public comments ¨C agenda item # followed by their name and place of residence, followed by their comments.

3. Live via zoom. If you would like to make a live public comment during the meeting this option is available through the virtual meeting platform: . Note that this virtual meeting platform link will let you into the virtual meeting for the purpose of providing a public comment. If you do not intend to make a public comment, please use the YouTube link at to observe the meeting.

In Defense of Animals has composed in advance of this meeting, which we will be delivering to the Parks District, urging them to develop and implement a humane, nonlethal solution, in cooperation with the area¡¯s local shelters.

Please sign and share to the East Bay Regional Park District to stop the killing.

We can¡¯t do it without you!

Transforming Our Food System

From Stephanie Feldstein, Population and Sustainability Program Director

Earth

A identifies the global food system as the main cause of habitat and biodiversity loss over the past 50 years. Its authors identify three strategies to reduce the threats to wildlife from food production: 1) shift toward plant-based diets to reduce demand for meat and dairy, 2) protect native ecosystems from being converted into agricultural land, and 3) adopt farming practices that support biodiversity.

The second two strategies are only possible if the first is achieved, since replacing livestock production with plant-based foods would use less land, water and energy. These are the same tactics that have underpinned the Center for Biological Diversity's for the past six years. Read on to learn more about our work to transform the food system and address unsustainable population growth and consumption.

Better Than a Box of Chocolates

Healthy relationships awareness event

Valentine's Day date night plans may have been disrupted by the pandemic, but that doesn't mean couples weren't getting wild. That's why instead of flowers or chocolates, Center volunteers gave away this month. People distributed the condoms at socially distanced Valentine's Day celebrations, including this display in a residence hall at a Michigan university encouraging healthy relationships with partners and the planet. Have an idea for a socially distant condom giveaway? Email us.

Food Policies to Fight Climate Change

One way state governments can reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions is by requiring departments and agencies to buy fewer meat and dairy products and shift toward plant-rich options. Procurement policies can also address climate change by minimizing food waste and tracking food-related emissions. The Center is that would do just that.

We're also supporting legislation in Hawaii that would ban cruel confinement of egg-laying hens and the sale of eggs from cruelly confining facilities. Extreme confinement is not only inhumane ¡ª it also to air pollution, water contamination, habitat degradation and climate change.

Here's one thing you can do: with your local and state officials to encourage them to adopt climate-friendly food policies.

The Language of Love

According to the book The Five Love Languages, everyone prefers one of these ways of expressing love: quality time, physical touch, words of affirmation, acts of service or receiving gifts. But despite the $27 billion Valentine's Day industry pushing us to shower loved ones with teddy bears, flowers and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, receiving gifts is actually the least common love language ¡ª meaning this holiday consumerism is wasteful and unnecessary.

In , the Center's Population and Sustainability Organizer Sarah Baillie discusses how expressing love with gifts has become a problem for relationships and the environment, and how people can rethink gift-giving for future holidays.

Here's one thing you can do: Even though Valentine's Day is over, there are plenty of meaningful, eco-friendly ways you can throughout the year.

Webinar: Eat for the Climate

Food and nutrition professionals play a unique role in influencing what people eat, what's available on menus, and how we perceive healthy diets. The is an emerging movement for these professionals to use their passion and skills to cultivate a fair, climate-resilient food system. The first step is helping these experts better understand the environmental side of the equation. Population and Sustainability Director Stephanie Feldstein presented at the collective's kick-off event "Eat for the Climate: The Food and Environment Connection" on how meat and dairy production affects wildlife and the planet, and how food and nutrition professionals can support diet shifts.

Here's one thing you can do: Share the Planetary Health Collective with food and nutrition pros in your community or if you work in the field.

Ending the Global Gag Rule

As he promised, President Joe Biden quickly revoked the "global gag rule," which prevented international organizations from receiving U.S. funds if they provide, promote or support abortion services. While this is good news for global health and empowerment, unfortunately the gag rule next time there's a Republican in office. The only way to stop this game of political football with reproductive rights is by , legislation reintroduced this session to permanently repeal the gag rule.

Here's what you can do: Stay tuned for ways to support the Global HER Act. And learn more about why is an important part of reproductive autonomy.

Study: Traffic Jams Birds' Brains

Songbirds around the world have adapted to more than their fair share of challenges, from reflective windows to predatory pets, and learned to thrive in cities. But new research found that despite these birds' resilience, . When exposed to the sound of cars and trucks rattling by, birds took twice as long to learn new skills, like remembering where to find hidden food. This is something we have in common with birds ¡ª loud traffic noise has also been found to impair humans' ability to focus on tasks.

Here's one thing you can do: to shift the state's fleet to electric vehicles and require 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2030. Electric vehicles help reduce noise pollution as well as the climate pollution that threatens songbirds.

American bumblebee

Wildlife Spotlight: American Bumblebee

The charismatic black-and-yellow bumblebee has long buzzed across America's grasslands and open spaces, helping sustain crops and ecosystems. But those open spaces are disappearing fast. As grasslands have been destroyed by urban sprawl and converted to pesticide-laden monocrops over the past 20 years, these powerful, fuzzy pollinators have suffered an 89% decline.

But there's still hope. The Center and the Bombus Pollinator Association of Law Students of Albany Law School the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect American bumblebees under the Endangered Species Act.

We are now on the back end of the most ferocious winter storm that has ever hit the entirety of Texas in its known history.?Wind chills ranged from 20 to 35 below zero. They say this was the winter storm version the likes of a category 5 hurricane.?The temperatures reached sub-zero, the winds blew at 60mph and brought many inches of snow and ice and devastating cold which our state could not handle. The artic blast froze natural gas supplies, stopped wind turbines from spinning and caused main city pipes to burst, 14 in our small town alone.

Millions of Texas residents and businesses were without electricity for days on end, many without water as well. Food supplies dwindled and ran out because semi-trucks could not travel the icy roads to restock grocery stores. Animals forced to stay outside with no protection froze to death. Bat World Sanctuary, however, did not lose one animal.

All of our staff lives on site, on Bat World Sanctuary¡¯s land, for reasons just like this. We are ready and able to handle nearly any disaster that may arise. The artic blast was predicted to last 4 to 5 days, but we had freezing temperatures before the artic freeze ever hit us. In accordance with our emergency plan, we had to allow for the fact the food trucks may not be able to get through on icy roads. Two days before the devastating temperature drop, we went to local stores and purchased enough food for all of the sanctuary animals for more than a week, including extra enrichment items like green peppers and mangoes for the fruit bats. We made sure our generator was running smoothly and well supplied with enough fuel for a week. We closed access to the semi-outdoor flight area for the fruit bats because, even though a large heater keeps the bay temperature a safe 65 to 75 degrees during the winter months, we expected it would not hold and fruit bats cannot withstand cold temperatures. With the semi-outdoor flight enclosure closed, we moved our rescued goats inside so they could be under the same warm roof with our rescued dogs. We also provided extra heat panels for the goats so the temperature never dropped below 55 in our bay. Lastly, we moved our heated water bucket (normally used for the goats) to our wildlife area so the birds and other wild animals would have access to water. Then, four days into the freeze, our 30 gallons of water stored for emergency needs came in handy when our city water pipes, as well as our own back-up water supply, froze.

(Video footage below is from?.)

We have heard numerous reports of animals freezing to death and suffering from frostbite throughout Texas. We believe, as a sanctuary with animals whose lives depend on us, we should prepare for any disaster, even disasters that seem implausible.?It is not lost on us that you contribute to our ability to do just that. ?Your donations bought our generator, the fuel for the generator, the water, the food and all the other supplies we needed to get us through this emergency.

We were prepared, and not one animal was compromised.? One of the greatest things we as humans strive to accomplish is to make a difference in life.? Please know, Dear Bat World Sanctuary supporters, that you have made a significant difference to the hundreds of bats we house and the thousands we save each year.?You are our hero¡¯s, and we realize that now more than ever.

Thank you,

The Bat World Sanctuary Team
