Moderated Breaking: Trump Partners With NRA to Kill Wildlife

From: Center for Biological Diversity <bioactivist@...>
Date: Fri, Jan 15, 2021 at 11:48 AM

The NRA penned an agreement with the Trump administration to recruit more trophy hunters.
??? ??? ???

Judith, ?

Trump's outgoing U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Aurelia Skipwith just signed an agreement to work with the NRA to recruit and train more Americans to shoot wild animals.

This partnership will allow more animals to be shot ¡ª paid for by the agency tasked with protecting wildlife while funneling taxpayer dollars to a far-right gun-industry mouthpiece.

Throughout its anti-wildlife term, the Trump administration has moved to expand trophy hunting. It created an illegal wildlife council rigged with trophy hunters and issued permits to import body parts of threatened leopards and lions.

The administration moved to increase hunting of bobcats, mountain lions and foxes in more national wildlife refuges across the country and now wants to arm and train more people to gun down animals.

With wolves across the lower 48 no longer federally protected, more states could hold wolf trophy hunts this year.

This last attack runs directly counter to the purpose of the Service. In no way should it use its position as wildlife's protector to enlist more Americans to hunt and kill wildlife.

The agreement between the Department of Interior and the NRA should be torn up and cancelled immediately.

Moderated Birdfeeder alert: Outbreak of Salmonella Poisoning Killing Songbirds

An outbreak of salmonella poisoning is killing songbirds throughout the Bay Area, and WildCare needs your help to stop the spread!

The disease salmonellosis is deadly to birds, and spreads rapidly through songbird populations. An epidemic can start when birds feed together at bird feeders, or when they use improperly-cleaned birdbaths.

Since January 1, WildCare has admitted 42 Pine Siskins ill with salmonellosis. Sadly, over 90% of them have died. Our Hotline has also received multiple calls about ill and dead songbirds in people's yards.

Although WildCare discourages the feeding of any wildlife, we recognize that millions of people enjoy their bird feeders. If you are feeding birds, you have a responsibility to the birds and local wildlife to follow the "intelligent feeding guidelines" as endorsed by WildCare, the Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Everyone with a birdfeeder needs to know this information!

Thank you for your help,

Moderated Next steps to save Point Reyes' Tule Elk

Subject: Next steps to save Point Reyes' Tule Elk
To: <judithrachelleg@...>

Dear Friends,

We're so?grateful that the?California Coastal Commission,?after hearing widespread?public opposition including?, postponed?their vote on?the National Park Service's (NPS) Record of Decision for?Point Reyes.

While we savor this win, we know?there is more work to be done to save the Tule Elk.?NPS' Acting Regional Director Linda Walker could still sign the Record of Decision, which would finalize extended ranching leases, even without the Coastal Commission's compliance.

Please write to Linda Walker today and urge her not to sign any plan that threatens public access to our Park, the ecological health of our region and, critically, the lives of Tule Elk. We've written the sample letter below to get you started, please feel free to customize it.

You can email your letter to:
Linda_Walker@...,?with?a "cc" to

Thank you for doing your part to save the Elk. Finding your voice and sharing it with key decision makers?-- this?is how democracy works.?

Thank you,
Diana, Founder of For Elk

Dear Acting Regional Director Linda Walker,

In the coming weeks, the National Park Service (NPS) has signaled its intent to sign a General Management Plan Amendment Record of Decision for Point Reyes National Seashore that is detrimental to the ecological health of our beloved park and our region.

I am writing to ask that you not sign any plan that prioritizes ranching over access to public land and native wildlife, especially before the California Coastal Commission has time to weigh in.

I may not be a scientist, but I am a lover of Point Reyes National Seashore. It¡¯s a beautiful and special place where people near and far come to enjoy the beaches, hiking trails, seals, birds and, in particular, the wild Tule Elk. The Tule Elk are truly a gem of Northern California's park system. They should be protected and allowed to roam free rather than being fenced in and killed if the current National Park Service plan goes into effect.

Thousands of park visitors like me strongly believe that our National Park Service has a duty to protect these native plants and animals. It is why our Parks exist. Yet, whenever I go to Point Reyes, I notice that there are far more cows than native Tule Elk. The structures used by these ranchers ¡ª who have been described as ¡°historic¡± and ¡°visitors¡± themselves ¡ª are modern, industrialized and use hundreds of miles of fences within the park that limit movement and access of wildlife and visitors alike. There is also considerable concern regarding water quality because of the ranches. The land currently leased to farmers in Point Reyes severely takes away from my enjoyment and access of this public land. And in its support of ranching on public land, the National Park Service is prioritizing ranchers¡¯ profits over the health and vitality of the habitat NPS has promised to protect.

Acting Regional Director Linda Walker, the world is changing and I ask you to do the right thing. Do not sign the current General Management Plan Amendment for Point Reyes National Seashore, or any plan that destroys habitat and native species in favor of ranching or farming. Protect people¡¯s access to public land and the ecosystem of Point Reyes. Please do not sign this Record of Decision.

Thank you,
