Compassionate Living E-News, January 2021

Good riddance 2020, let's give a warm welcome to 2021!

May this year bring much needed peace and hope to the entire planet and may it bring us even closer to a compassionate vegan world.?

This month, we are featuring fish, the forgotten food animal. We want to?introduce

you to a new fish rescue in Sonoma County, Friends of Phillip Fish Rescue.

Alternate text

Before and After Photos of Phillip

is a fish rescue, sanctuary, and advocacy group dedicated to fostering the connection between people and aquatic life through sharing the stories and vibrant personalities of rescued animals. Our rescue started with the first rescue of Philip. Philip was a pet store betta and like millions of his fellows, Philip was suffering from neglect and poor care. He was thin, pale, and missing most of his fins. The manager let Philip come home as a free ¡°adoption¡± to give him a chance to recover. With a simple change in environment and care, Philip recovered from his neglect, and is still with us today.

?

Philip¡¯s rescue has inspired us to rescue dozens more fish and we have recently decided to continue expanding our rescue, education, and advocacy efforts by become a registered 501(c)3 non-profit in 2021.?To learn more about supporting us and opportunities for adoption, please find us on social media (@friendsofphilip), , or

Update on the Sonoma County VegFest

?

We don't want to get our hopes too high, but we have set a date for the SoCo VegFest. Tentatively mark your calendars for Sunday, September 26, 2021. If the infection numbers come down and event restrictions are eased, we just might be able to have a VegFest! We have moved to the Santa Rosa Veterans Building for more outdoor space and will be spreading out and taking precautions, but we are hopeful that we will once again be able to gather in celebration of compassionate, healthy living. Please get in touch with any thoughts, concerns, or questions: hope@...

From everyone at Compassionate Living, we hope that you stay safe

and healthy for the duration of the pandemic. We are holding in our

hearts that we will all be together again soon.

Moderated URGENT ACTION] 2 more days to save tule elk

Call on the California Coastal Commission to

Judith,

Next week, the fate of the free-roaming tule elk at Point Reyes National Seashore will be decided.

I need your help right now to protect these magnificent animals from being removed¡ªor worse, killed¡ªfrom the National Seashore.

?

The plan will eliminate the free-ranging tule elk in Point Reyes National Seashore, despite vehement opposition from California residents and wildlife advocates.

Up until a few decades ago, tule elk, endemic to California, were thought to be extinct as a result of unfettered commercial hunting and displacement by cattle. Many California residents and groups, including the National Park Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, spent decades working to re-establish a free-ranging herd on the National Seashore.

Today, the tule elk are living proof of the success of conservation.?

¡ªa plan that will eliminate the free-ranging tule elk that were so recently brought back from the brink of extinction, and that the Park Service and many others fought so hard to re-introduce.

This disastrous plan is up for a vote NEXT THURSDAY, January 14. Please let California officials know that not only for its plans to eliminate tule elk from the Point Reyes National Seashore but for the additional and expanded agricultural uses which are certain to cause further conflicts between ranching operations and native wildlife.

Thank you for your support,??

On Sept. 8, a nature photographer named Marko Haug saw a moose near a reservoir in Paide, Estonia. No. 1The New WhaleThere are vast mysteries yet to be discovered.

In November, the whale expert Jay Barlow and colleagues working in the Pacific off Mexico spotted some beaked whales, which are seldom seen. It¡¯s in today¡¯s New York Times and was on last night¡¯s local TV news (Santa Clara was mentioned but I¡¯m sure not the only). You¡¯d have to look up which.?

I heard from a friend Crane Pavilion is being set up again but way late and no idea why no ships, again and other land buildings as he did before when they end up not being needed. I?

I don¡¯t think any of the competition stuff applies during emergencies. And, this isn¡¯t about a general hospital shortages (though there are some), as hospitals just aren¡¯t ever prepared for this amount of need.

A "root cause" here is lack of sufficient capacity, i.e. why aren't there more treatment facilities available? The answer may have to do with regulations like "certificate of need laws", which in many states limit competition by requiring proposed new health care facilities to get the approval of existing facilties before opening. (Yes, this regulation actually is as dumb as it sounds!)...

"Over the past 50 years, most states enacted (and many still retain) Certificate of Need (CON) laws, whose stated purpose is to control medical costs by limiting the supply of services and facilities to only what is ¡°needed,¡± as determined by a state board or agency. Simply put, CON laws make it illegal for healthcare providers to offer services to patients, or to purchase certain medical equipment, without first getting permission from those providers already operating in the market. That permission is often denied¡ªnot because of any threat to public health, but solely to prevent legitimate economic competition.

Soon after the federal government encouraged states to adopt such laws in the 1970s, it became clear that this cost control experiment was a failure. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice, and several academic studies found that by eliminating competition, CON laws actually drove up costs, lowered quality, and limited the availability of needed services. As the American Medical Association succinctly put it: ¡°CON laws represent a failed public policy.¡±

Yet 38 states still have CON laws on their books, and continue to require government approval before building or expanding a healthcare facility or service¡ªapproval that can hinge on whether existing hospitals are willing to allow others to enter the market to compete against them.1 This is primarily because existing providers benefit handsomely from CON laws, which allow them to block would-be competitors."

Moderated Phytoestrogens!

This provides a thorough list of foods which have phytoestrogens. ?

Animal eaters love to preach how dangerous soy is but they got it wrong from the dairy and beef industry propaganda fed to their Dr & media. ?

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has talked for decades how soy and other phytoestrogens are protective against cancer, as they are grabbed by the estrogen receptors.? The study below, in a mainstream pharma article says the same.? And, ¡°The Game Changers¡± on Netflix, has a little section on them.

FLAX seed actually has more than soy. And, we all know flaxseed is high fiber and balanced hormone and sugar levels. And, has healthy omegas.

So eat your soy and flax and many other beans and grains in peace, knowing they¡¯re healthy for you, unless you¡¯re allergic, of course.

Moderated Sad news in the fight against driftnets

---------- Forwarded message ---------
From: Turtle Island Restoration Network <action@...>

President Trump decides to

Dear Judith,

Our ocean just suffered a huge loss.

On Friday, President Trump vetoed a bill that would gradually eliminate the use of large-scale driftnet fishing in federal waters off the coast of California.

The West Coast driftnet fishery is the only one remaining in the United States for good reason ¡ª this antiquated fishing method catches and kills marine animals in horrifying amounts. In addition to potentially saving the Pacific leatherback sea turtle from extinction, the Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act would have provided funds for fishers to transition to more sustainable fishing methods with less bycatch of non-target species.

This attack on protected marine species is an attack on our ocean, our environment, our climate, and YOUR voice, Judith.

And Turtle Island Restoration Network and our partners will respond immediately ¡ª and do everything within our power to ensure the legislation is re-introduced under the Biden administration and signed into law. We won¡¯t be able to respond so effectively without the support of activists like you.

Please help us share this disappointing news on and .

If Trump's veto is allowed to stand, innocent marine animals ¡ª like whales, dolphins, fish, and sharks ¡ª will continue to be captured, injured, and even killed with little-to-no environmental review, public input, or analysis of long-term impacts on the environment, our economy, or the people who live near this habitat.?

Make no mistake: this decision is a clear attempt to put politics above common-sense wins for wildlife and for fishers.

We must ¡ª and will ¡ª do everything in our power to stop the Trump administration's veto and save our ocean, including fighting back in federal court if necessary.

Thank you for standing with us at this critical moment.

Sincerely,??
