SeaSpiracy, Overfishing and Conspiracy
The new Netflix film SeaSpiracy by first time filmmaker Ali Tabrizi with Producer Ian Andersen (Cowspiracy) reveals to a new audience what the conservation community has known and has been working to overcome: overfishing the oceans. Told in a sensationalist style, the film shows shocking scenes of slavery, shark finning and whale killing. The topic of overfishing and exploitation is of critical importance and we applaud the exposure and awareness the film brings. However, better called CONspiracy, the film offers a simplistic solution?to a complex problem and does a great disservice to many non profits who have worked to protect the oceans for decades.?
Renowned fisheries scientist, Dr. Daniel Pauly, has said the movie's solution to simply stop eating seafood is a detractor to stopping overfishing.?In his podcast , Andrew Lewin dissects the film and covers the film's inaccurate attack on Earth Island Institute projects, Surfrider Foundation, WWF and other non-profits who are working to protect our oceans.
We all agree that the oceans are being overfished- we are losing sharks at an alarming rate -and we need to get to work protecting our oceans. Let's get busy.
