Action Alert:

?
STOP POLLUTION AT POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE
?
CONTACT THE CALIFORNIA COASTAL COMMISSION TODAY

Public Comments due by 5 PM Friday, April 16th.
?
The California Coastal Commission will be holding a special public hearing on ranching at Point Reyes National Seashore on Earth Day - Thursday, April 22, starting at 9am.
?
The Commissioners will decide whether to approve the National Park Service¡¯s plan to expand commercial ranching at the Seashore, extend ranching leases from five to twenty years and allow ranchers to grow crops add goats, sheep, chickens, and pigs to the park.
?
Ranching on 28,000 acres of the Seashore and nearby Golden Gate National Recreation Area was supposed to end decades ago. But more than 5,500 beef and dairy cattle continue to graze on these fragile public lands¡ªdespite dangerously high levels of water pollution from cow manure; chronic overgrazing; damage to vital habitat for rare, threatened, and endangered species; and the deaths of hundreds of native Tule elk for lack of forage and water reserved for the cattle.

The National Park Service (NPS) plan?is?inconsistent?with California¡¯s Coastal Act. The plan will allow significant?new development, uses, and activities on national parkland that will?irreversibly and?negatively impact resources in the coastal zone and the public¡¯s use and enjoyment of the California coast.?

The plan authorizes additional and expanded agriculture?that?will cause further conflicts between ranching operations and native wildlife.

Expanded commercial livestock grazing and new farming activities should not come at the expense of public recreation, natural scenic quality, and wildlife conservation.

Without current?data on environmental impacts of?the?more than 5,000 cattle on?these national parklands, neither the?NPS nor the Coastal Commission has the necessary information to?confidently determine whether the NPS¡¯s plan for continued ranching at the Seashore for at least the next 20 years?is?consistent with the?California Coastal Act.
?
The Commissioners must withhold their approval of the Consistency Determination until scientific data exists that can ensure that the NPS plan is fully consistent with California law. ?
?
THERE IS STILL TIME TO TURN THE TIDE
