Thanks to your advocacy, the California legislature has passed five critical bills to protect people, wildlife, and the climate.

Three of them address the climate crisis. The Local Environmental Choice and Safety Act empowers local governments to regulate oil drilling, the Idle Oil Wells Clean Up Bill speeds the cleanup of hazardous idle wells, and the Low-Producing Wells Accountability Act imposes fines on wells that don’t produce much but threaten nearby communities. These bills will reduce fossil-fuel pollution and ensure that oil companies are held accountable for their impacts on public health.

The other two bills focus on wildlife and are key to protecting California's biodiversity. The Poison-Free Wildlife Act expands restrictions on toxic rat poisons that harm wildlife like owls and mountain lions; the Room to Roam Act requires cities and counties to prioritize wildlife connectivity in their land-use planning.

These protections could soon be a reality — but first the governor must sign the bills into law.
