I have an Alinco handheld that I can instantly switch between channel mode and VFO without affecting the programming.? Can I do the same with the AT-778UV?? I've been hesitant to try it because of

I just checked and CHIRP does not specifically support your radio but it does
support the AT-778UV, which might have an identical memory database inside.

Another thought occurred to me. Have you considered using programming software?
If so, see if CHIRP covers your radio. If it doesn't, there may be another
Anytone radio that will work.
