New ham groups, also new pricing structure for groups

The next message is about some new groups I created to have a
general-purpose discussion group for some brands of amateur radio
equipment and radios before groups.io's new pricing structure goes
into effect Jan 81, 2021.

It is a long message, so I just wanted to give you a heads-up. I
cross-posted it to all the groups I manage.

I will be looking for moderators for the new groups and even some of
the established groups, so if you're interested in helping, please
email me privately about this.

For the rest, please read my next post. It's a long and detailed one.

New ham groups added, new groups.io pricing structure on Jan 18, 2021 (long post, intentionally cross-posted)

First, the new pricing structure for NEWLY formed groups on groups.io
beginning January 18, 2021.

Basic (free) groups formed on or after that date stay free *up to 100
members*. After that, it will need to be upgraded to a premium group.
Premium groups ($220/year) are good up to 400 members, after which a
per-member fee ($.05 per month or $0.55 per year) is added to the $220
per year premium group fee. That will bring a burden on some new
groups, so I created some more ham groups that may grow, or flounder,
but I wanted to beat the deadline so those groups will not be charged
extra fees, or any fees, for that matter. If they take off and are
useful, that will be great. If they flounder, I might just delete the
group if members agree, or if there are no co-owners by the time I
review whether the group is worth keeping.

If you were thinking of creating a group for one of your interests,
THIS IS THE TIME TO DO SO before the new pricing structure goes into
effect. If you need help with that, email me *privately* and if I'm
not overwhelmed with requests, I will try to help. You must be willing
to assume group ownership as I will leave the group after creating it
and you've been made a group owner. If you need help getting started
with the group, I can hang around for a short while and direct you to
documentation on how to run a group.

As for the new groups I created last evening, I will list their web
addresses below.

Please contact me *privately* ONLY IF you are interested in joining
one of these groups AND ARE UNABLE to use the join button on the web
site or find the join process confusing. I would like to avoid what
happened when Yahoo closed their groups and I offered to help people
if they were unable to join themselves. I was overwhelmed with
requests to help, and I'm sure not all of those were from people who
had difficulty joining, so please give it a try yourself first. Go to
the site and press the join button on the group(s) you are interested
in. Follow the simple instructions and you will be approved. All new
members will be moderated for a short time so don't expect to post
immediately. There's only one moderator right now (me), and I work for
a living, sleep at night, and take naps because of my health condition
in late afternoons sometimes. I donate some of my time for community
work, am a minister, and have to wisely use my time.

But I don't want anyone to not join one of these groups because they
find it difficult to join.

YOU CAN JOIN ANY OF THESE GROUPS BY EMAIL by sending a message to the
subscribe address. Take the web address name at the end of the URL and
change it by adding [email protected] to it.

For the FT-757 group (as an example):
/g/FT-757GX
Send an email to this address:
[email protected]
no body text is required in the message, just the address, but to make
your email program happy, you can put the word subscribe in the
subject and message fields.

These new lists are email reflectors only with no storage (a change
that was made almost a year ago by GIO's owner). If I had created them
before February 2020, they would have storage. We will work something
out for storage if the groups get large enough and have a need for
that.

I will need moderators for these new groups, and soon after they get
on their feet, a co-owner who has some real interest and hopefully
experience with these different brands of radios.

Contact me off-list if you are interested in volunteering with any of
these groups. I will help you out with anything you need to know about
how to manage a group as a moderator or co-owner.

I will list the NEW groups first, then list the other amateur radio
groups I created.

Note that most of these are not model-specific and are
"general-purpose" groups for a BRAND of radio or a general-purpose
group for a type of equipment. I did not create any group for which
there already was a general-purpose discussion group for that brand of
radio, like Drake and some others. I am not interested in amassing a
lot of groups to manage. My purpose is just to see that interests in
major amateur radio brands are covered by some group for our amateur
radio community.

Let me know *privately* if I missed a MAJOR brand of vintage or
current brand of amateur radio and I will decide if I want to create a
group for that, but I'm not interested in managing lots and lots of
ham groups. My purpose is to get these groups created so they will be
grandfathered under the old pricing structure and won't cost the group
owner (me) money based on how many members there are.

Antennas will be covered by our ham-antennas group, so I didn't think
creating a new group for the major makers of antennas would be useful
and might just splinter the community across more groups. The antenna
tuners group is not approved yet but should be by later today so you
should be able to join in a few hours if you're interested.

The NEW groups are:

Alinco /g/Alinco-Amateur-Radio
Antenna Tuners /g/Antenna-Tuners
Anytone /g/Anytone-Amateur-Radio
Collins /g/Collins-Amateur-Radio
EF Johnson /g/EFJohnson-Amateur-Radio

Anytone AT-D868UV

Hello all. Lou (W2LPC) here, I need some help in getting my Anytone 868 up and running. If anyone has a working codeplug for central NJ, I would be very appreciative. Thanks in advance.
My email is w2lpc@.... I'm good on QRZ.

We just started this group earlier this year just before the changes
to basic groups was made to be grandfathered under the old group
policies. So we won't get charged if our membership goes over 100, but
it will be a while before we see membership numbers get even close to
that anyway, so stick with the group and wait and see. I started
groups for several vintage radio brands and made sure all major
current ham radio brands were covered for transceivers that weren't
already covered. I didn't check on SDR radios, but I would think there
would be existing groups for those.

Another of our groups is hamradiohelp. Try posting there and see what
happens, but probably the best thing you can do is to find a club near
you and email them or get on their weekly radio net (if they have one)
and ask about a code plug for your Anytone radio. Get on a few FB
amateur radio groups (I'm not a big fan of FB myself but use it),
especially ones for your area, and post there, too. See if someone
nearby can send you a code plug. And, if they live hear you, they
might be able to help you with any questions you may have about
setting it up, perhaps even being able to help you do that on your
radio.

I don't have one of these but I was considering buying one, mainly
just to have a better-built radio than my Baofeng HT. I am still
undecided though. HTs aren't all that useful where I live, though I
have a 25W 2M amp in the garage I bought at a local hamfest that I
could use at the house to talk to the net.

hi,
I am trying to help a new ham . I am? setting? up his AT-779UV .I am trying to program? in? the repeater manually . I cant find the enter/ save button. Store channel instruction does not seem to work).
On the AT-778 it is simple just push in the volume button. Has anyone a written instruction for saving any simplex/duplex frequency to memory ?
All Ideas most welcome.

I don't have one of these. I set this group up for the brand, though, thinking
it would draw more people than it has. We have 45 members so far. Hopefully one
of them knows how to program these.

I also posted your request in my club's FB group and also on the hamradiohelp
group, asking if they can help to join this group.

Here are some links that might help. The first is a video on manual programming.
I think the other three only cover programming it with a cable connected to your
PC.

Re: Anytone AT-779uv

Another thought occurred to me. Have you considered using programming software?
If so, see if CHIRP covers your radio. If it doesn't, there may be another
Anytone radio that will work.

There's also software from RT Systems. It's great but not free, and if CHIRP
covers your radio, I'd suggest going with that. You'll need a programming cable
if one did not come with your radio. If you go this route (many do because of
how difficult it is to program some of the Chinese radios), don't buy a cheap
cable. One with an FTDI chipset is more likely to work based on many reviews
I've read. There's also the Prolific chipset for programming cables. Read the
reviews for any cable you buy, especially the lower ratings.

The problem with these is that there are many knock-offs and the Prolific driver
will refuse to work with these counterfeit chips in the cable. You could buy the
correct cable from RT Systems (to get a reliable cable) and use CHIRP for free.
If you don't mind spending $50 or so, you can get the software and cable from
them.

There is a CHIRP group if you need help:

/g/CHIRP

I believe there is enough information in the files section to get you started.
You'll need to download the software and get a cable.

The cables can be found on Amazon's site or you can take a chance with eBay. You
have reviews to fall back on with Amazon, and a generous return policy if it
doesn't work. (I'd still opt for the ones with the best reviews (with a high
number of reviews, too).

I just checked and CHIRP does not specifically support your radio but it does
support the AT-778UV, which might have an identical memory database inside.

Hi Don,

You have really gone to a lot of trouble to help me, which is much appreciated.

I am helping a new amateur set up his shack. He was complaining that his 2m rig was cutting out which I think was either

An over heating problem or loose mic lead. But since I have been using the radio all seems well.

I thought I would help him out by programming in the local repeater. That’s where my problems started.

Being new to the hobby he knows nothing about repeaters.

?

The programme soft ware is not pre loaded and I don’t have a computer lead for the Anytone AT 779UV.( I do not want to buy one as the rig does not belong to me)

?

I cant find the negative repeater TX setting and it does not show red on the LCD screen.

I cant set the tone to 600HZ as 605HZ is the nearest I can get!

How do I get from upper case to lower case on the Mic buttons?

All very confusing .

Thanks for the links to the Videos etc but they are all for setting up the settings on a computer.

I have tried every YouTube vid I could find also vids to Anytone GMRS radios very interesting but of no help to me.

Look at Radio DDITY DB20-G.

?

At the end of the day I will have to hand back the radio and ?tell him to buy the Computer lead. They are not a fortune.

Re: Anytone AT-779uv

Try the radio at his house and see if it still acts up.?

As for programming, these cheaper Chinese radios like this and Baofengs are not easy to program from the keypad. As you said, let him buy a cable and then it can be programmed with CHIRP. If you follow the directions for CHIRP you can get the local repeaters downloaded with the frequency, offset, tone, etc., all there. You just copy and paste from one tab to another what you are interested in. You probably won't copy everything, and you'll probably want to put the closest repeaters in the lower numbered memories.?

It could be. I doubt at VHF it would cause a problem but then again, who knows
until you test it out?

Check his power supply to be sure it can put out the CONTINUOUS current that the
radio will take. If it cuts out on high power, I'd take a voltage reading at the
power supply and also if you have pointy voltage probes, at the place where the
power leads go into the radio when it's keyed up. Being FM, it should draw
continuous current.

If it acts up and the voltage doesn't drop appreciably, then I would think
trying it on low power might be worth trying. I have a mobile radio that would
cut out on high power but not medium or low power. I didn't troubleshoot it
before I got rid of that car but will troubleshoot it when I install it in my
newer car. It could be voltage drop or RF feedback. I'll find out if it happens
after the new install. I was just happy to put it on medium power as it was
adequate for around here on medium.

Assuming all connections are clean, you won't have to troubleshoot those. If
not, you know what to do. :-)

I think all of them have so many options we can't avoid some sort of menu
system. Some are better than others. The Chinese radios aren't so intuitive.
hopefully yours will be.

You might find a quick reference card (the brand is Nifty, I believe) for your

Thanks for the helpful reply. I had not heard of Nifty so thanks for the ?info.

I know what you mean about menus they drive me mad! I have an old FDK Multi 700EX that I use for local 2m QSO’s

I had to add CTCSS yes it is that old. But the beauty is it is purely mechanical ( Well electrical). But no menu system.

It even manages to connect with the local repeaters!

AT-778UV question

I have an Alinco handheld that I can instantly switch between channel mode and VFO without affecting the programming.? Can I do the same with the AT-778UV?? I've been hesitant to try it because of the hours I've invested in the programming of the channels.

Yes you can. The 778 is quite friendly in this respect. One of the
options for the soft buttons is VFO/MR, and it always goes back to where
it was before with everything else unchanged.

Question about building a code plug for travel

Questions on building first code plug for my AT878UV+.

I'm traveling this summer around USA for about 3500km each way. I used repeaterbook search by highway and band and crossed radio reference to remove channels more than 10 miles radius from route and stops. I have both analog and DMR in my csv channel file. These sources seem not to be setup for a vacation travel.
?
I'm currently searching through each DMR channel to get talk groups they allow, I guess. I haven't tried loading into the radio because I was told that the order to import is talk groups, channels, zones, and then contacts for the digital side. Then channels, zones for the analog side.
?
Do I create a different channel for each talk group that specific repeater allows??
?
Example repeater https://www.repeaterbook.com/repeaters/details.php?state_id=06&ID=8035 has 5 talk groups according to https://brandmeister.network/?page=repeater&id=310738 (I noticed inactivity, but using as example) so if I want to scan for activity to signal for help or something, I have to create 5 separate channels for this repeater?

What about zones? Should I group them into all 250 zones, a zone for each 14km? And then there is gps ranging with only 16 entries.?

I am hoping that I can use my local pi-star hotspot and tether to my cellular wifi hotspot to make up for the deadzones zones.

Anytone 500-M

I bought this radio because of the FM CB feature at a two-way radio technician in Troy, Texas.? When I bought this unit, the technician also sold a 4 pin Astatic power microphone.? I did not realize until I was ready to install it.??

The Anytone microphone is a flimsy piece of crap.? From what I understand, I have two options for taking the adapter route.

I don't know whether I need to buy a 4-6 pin adapter for a RCI Ranger-type radio or a 6 pin Uniden and President radio.??

I love this radio.? I would appreciate feedback.??
