Sticky Welcome to the new group 4
Welcome all to this group. I set it up as a generic group primarily for amateur radio operators that covers both commercially-made and home-built impedance matching devices used to match an antenna system to a transmitter (or receiver). Technically, what most of us call an antenna tuner is actually an impedance matching device, and probably in most cases it's attached at the transmitter end before a run of coax or open wire line to the antenna, so we're not tuning the antenna--we're tuning the antenna system. We're not going to be concerned about the term "antenna tuner" here, though, as most of us know what it is and that it's not usually acting as a true antenna tuner. Call it what you want, but most will call these an antenna tuner. I have several MFJ tuners, including the 939, which I like a lot, and the 3KW roller inductor tuner they make, as well as the smaller roller inductor tuner, a couple of "Versa Tuners," and a small MFJ auto tuner I plan to use for mobile use. I've never used it, but I also have their "ground tuner" that can change the RF electrical length of a ground wire from say a second story room to an earth ground below. Why MFJ? I've had great experience with their products, but I am aware that at times they fail to solder a joint properly or have other quality problems, and they've at times earned the nickname Mighty Fine Junk. There are other great tuners out there also. I just happened to pick up several of these at hamfests at a fraction of the normal selling price, and the price was low enough I bought some of these "just in case" I might need them sometime in the future. I ask that everyone treat each other with respect and dignity. No politics or religion here please (check your signature lines before posting). Don't be afraid to ask questions here. ONLINE LOOK at HIGHER-END MATCHING UNITS 12
I do not mind adjusting a manual matching network with changing frequencies. I have a very robust differential matching network with all of two, yes, just 2, adjustments. It's an L-network, of course. Yesterday I took a somewhat in-depth online look at the higher-end matching networks (a.k.a., "antenna tuners") from various suppliers. I note some of the really high-end units incorporate a fan in the box. Why, pray tell, must an "efficient" antenna matching unit require a fan???!!! If it is efficient as the marketing write-up has you believe, there should be no amount of heating that requires forced air ventilation!!! My home brew unit does not produce anything much above 5-degrees F above ambient - barely perceptable. Absolutely nothing which would even approach requiring forced air cooling. And remember, heat indicates loss. So, I would conclude these expensive matching networks are not what they claim to be!!!! Once again: 1) Do not trust marketingeeze or supplier claims 2) Measure everything 3) Buyer Beware -- Dave - W?LEV -- Please join me. Dave - W?LEV

Daiwa CNA-2002 auto tuner 13
I picked up a Daiwa CNA-2002 2.kw mechanical auto tuner at a hamfest recently. I was told by the seller that the tuner needed work, so I kind of new what I was getting into. When I hook the tuner up, and attempt to have it auto tune it does tune according to the meter on the tuner. The problem is when the tuner says the reflected power is 1.5:1 or less and stops, the actual swr, as measured by the radio and my external SWR / power meter, is infinite. If I manually stop the tuner from tuning when it (the tuner) shows the highest reflected power, then my radio and external meter show an SWR of 1.5:1 or lower. The forward power on the meter does not work. Can anyone think of what may be causing this? I have looked inside the tuner, and it does not look like anything has been rewired or replaced. Thanks. COMMON MODE CHOKES - DOES ONE-SIZE-FIT-ALL?? 7
I measured four of my common mode chokes (CMC) for CMRR (Common Mode Rejection Ratio) using the HP 3585 with its tracking generator. Then I took a picture of them lined up so anyone who reads this can ascertain the effectiveness of the various ferrite materials. While they are not all identical or the same size, the peak effectiveness and falloff of each material is quite evident. The tag below each CMC shows the frequency of measurement in MHz on the left and the CMRR in dB on the right column. From left to right are 75, 31, 43, and finally 61 material. Since these sites do not allow for embedded images, please see the attachment. I believe from my measured data it is quite evident that there is "no-size-fits-all" when it comes to CMCs, baluns, and transformers!!! The suppliers have you believe otherwise, of course. This is rigorously measured data which refutes supplier claims. And......once again.......buyer beware! And........measure everything! Dave - W?LEV -- Please join me. Dave - W?LEV

AATU exchange wanted 2
Hi, All, Due to a change of plans, I have available for sale an AH-705 Automatic ATU for the IC-705. This is absolutely brand new and unused because I never actually took delivery of the IC-705 I had intended to use it with! Ideally, I would like to exchange it for the Yaesu FC-30 ATU which matches the Yaesu FT-897 transceiver. If you don't have one of these, please Google second-hand FC-30s and I would accept that figure for a straight sale of the AH-705. Located in North Norfolk, but the AH-705 would be very easy to send by insured post. Bob

Buy ZM-2 in Europe? 2
Is anyone aware of a company in Europe reselling the Emtech ZM-2 tuner in Europe? I want to buy one but the shipping fee is almost as high as the ZM-2 itself and on top of that I will probably be charged with VAT and customs fees. Second best would be to find where I can buy the variable capacitors and build one from scratch. That would be fun as well but I don't really have the time to home-brew it at the moment and hence plan on the short cut to buy a kit. Bj?rn, SM0SBL

Alinco EDX-2 auto tuner repair
I bought a used non-working Alinco EDX-2 auto-tuner at a hamfest last weekend and believe I have it working. However, the tuner is made to use with certain Alinco radios so I don't know exactly how the automatic tuning function is supposed to work, and I want to use it with recently made Icom radios. When I have power and ground connected, and ground the white wire in the connector (I did it inside the box, actually), while transmitting RF using FM for a steady carrier, it seeks and finds a solution now (it didn't before I made some adjustments per the service manual), then stops making the chattering sound. If I simply ground the white wire, it tries to find a solution but with no RF, it never finds one, and I expect that. What I'd like to know is if this is the expected behavior of this unit? I'd also like to know if I hook up the red and black wires to an Icom tuner connector, and the white one also, so that they mate with the Icom radio's red, black, and white wires, will pressing the TUNE button on the Icom 7300 (or other recent Icom HF radio) initiate a tune and should the EDX-2 find a solution, without me having to manually short the white wire to ground? The user guide and service manual are very brief and don't fully explain how the switching works. I found that the white wire when grounded initiates tuning. When I remove it from ground it stops trying to tune. That's about all I know except that when I force a tune, it finds a solution that is less than 1.5 to 1 SWR. On 80 meters it takes a much longer time to find a solution, and it doesn't find one on 160 meters, though it's not said to work below 80M, and I didn't use a very long wire for the antenna or counterpoise in my tests when adjusting the unit. Z-Match 12
I studied quite a few documents dealing with Z-Match networks, schematics, construction desrcriptions, mesurement results and the more. I am looking for information regarding functional theory, design tools, network analysis and optimizing performance of a Z-Match. Also it would be most usefull to have a Java Script tool like the "T Network Tuner Simulation". I created a model in "Micro Cap 12", it gives meaningful results, but I am using a very tedious cut-and-try method. Any contributions , be it in PSpice, OrCad and similar network simulation programs would be highly appreciated. Just in case I am familiar with the relevant articles at https://www.qsl.net/vk5br/. 73, Robert W4BCZ

Murch UT-2000 schematic needed
Good day to all, I'm new to the group and I'm in need of a schematic for the Murch UT-2000B. The only schematic that I found on the internet shows one dual section air variable(250pf x 2 and one single section(250pf) air variable. The unit that I have has two dual section air variables. Also, the resistor value, capacitor value and diode are not the same as in my unit. Would someone in the group have the schematic that I'm looking for? Cheers! Janusz ve2zhp
