Re: Importance of college (was Paths into college admissions)

Rosi van Meel

I rarely read these emails any more, since my 3 unschoolers are now grown and have moved out and live on their own.

But something prompted me to read this email and I thought maybe you would like to hear what mine are up to and ended up doing after "unschooling".

But let me make it clear, they are all still learning. The wonderful thing about being raised outside of the school system is that you don't "stop", just because you have a graduation certificate or you are out of class, or finished a semester etc.

My eldest (28)? did go to college. She completed 3 years of a science degree before she decided it was enough. She got around not having a high school diploma by taking a few college credits first, before applying to the university.? She is now married, moved to a small community, where she is helping to care for my very elderly mother in law (her choice).? Here she works as a pharmacy technician, even though she does not have a certificate.? She has found she loves all aspects of pharmacy work.? She is now considering getting a? degree in pharmacy.

My son? (25) did not attend college and works as a twitch streamer. He was born visually impaired and at the age of 10 would tell every one that when he was an adult he wanted to make a living playing video games.? He plays, promotes, markets etc...? He gets paid to travel to conventions.

My youngest? (22) attended a music conservatory. She got around not having a diploma by having the teacher she wanted, see her perform? in several competitions. He then made it happen for her. She has now opened a music studio, and already has 23 violin students.?

I know when my children were young I was always so? happy to hear about unschooled adults and what they were up to. I hope this helps someone too.
