It would probably help to check the archives here for stories.??
There are some things on my website, too.
(that has links to two other pages, too)
I've just finished a book called The Coddling of the American Mind, and they're talking about some serious changes in universities, and ways to check in advance, before entering a university, to see whether their practices match what the student or family is hoping for, one way or the other.
Partly because of the student loan realities, and because more and more degrees seem fluff and nonsense, I've backed off of encouraging university studies when it's just for general purposes or exploration.? I have a friend who's a professor and can't buy a house because her student loans aren't paid off.? I have another friend who has a very cool master's degree, but she stopped citing it and asked me not to mention it, because her loans aren't paid, and she feels guilty.? She earned it, she knows the stuff, but it's not "hers" because it's not paid for, she figures.? ?Those kinds of things are not happy or hopeful.
We probably all know people with degrees they're not using, or who have degrees and don't make enough money to live well (or to pay their loans).? It's likely we all also know people making good money who didn't go to college (or who would've been better off using those four or six or ten years in on their current occupation),
This has links to some archives not available elsewhere (UnschoolingDiscussion when it was at yahoogroups), and various other things on my site:
