Re: Looking for build instructions for the 1 kW tuner from Ebay

Hey George:

I sent you an email to the address listed here. If you have a pdf file of the 1kW tuner assembly instructions, I would greatly appreciate receiving a copy of it. I bought a Chinese 1 kW kit off of EBAY, and it basically came with NOTHING but a photo of the completed PCB!?

?

Thanks, Dennis W1LJ

Re: Field Testing ATU-10 #ATU-10

Hi, Tony
On my opinion the problems with algorithm are proved. Because in the manual mode is possible to find raght combination.
In this tuner I have increased first element value especially to improve it's working on low bands.
The gaps on the graphs just meaning SWR will be 1.5-2.0 it is acceptable for me personally.
But you can use any other row of elements, starting 10 ot 5, if the high bands have more priority for you.?
On my opinion higher bands above 14MHz antennas could be implemented as full size resonant radiators very easy due to relatively short size of elements.?

Re: Impedance range

Dear Colin,

Oh, yes! My bad, I thought it is about the ATU-100.
The ATU-10 has rather weird line of values, I'm not content at all with. I'm sure the problems users experience with its' (mis)tuning are exacly down to the fact the values severely deviate from the powers of two line - both the capacitances and the inductances. And on top of that - the smallest capacitor is whooping 20pF - the value more in place for the second - or better yet - the third step on the capacitance ladder.

Warm regards,
Tony

The person in the Ukraine (Eu2AV) designed his off of David's design. I found his web page and he has almost everything you could want to build the 1 kW ATU.

He even has a BOM and the Gerber files for the board.

He also has the .HEX file for download.

Re: Impedance range

For some reason, I read this thread as ATU10¡. ?

Re: Impedance range

meaning, it can match an antenna impedance between 20 ohms to 1.5k ??

Re: Field Testing ATU-10 #ATU-10

Dear Joshua,
Thanks for the report!

Dear David,
I think most of the problems in the ATU-10 are not for the tuning algorithm deficiences (they are not proven to exist), in my opinion the root of the problem is the set of caps' and inductances' values chosen.
They heavily deviate from the powers of two line. And what's more - the 22pF is far too much for the smallest cap there. Should be 10pF, or better yet 5pF.
Here is . Notice the gaps and the irregular "holes" in the shaded areas. The lower half of the page has the caps' ans inds' values equal to the powers of two. Much more sane behaviour, - but the 22pF as the least capacitance still creates large gaps on the edges of the graph.
These (let them call it) bad values would create problems in optimum finding for any algorithm, even for the true brute-force one.

Warm regards,
Tony

Re: Impedance range

Hello!

The capacitances and inductances for the ATU-100 part of the script was taken from .
The cap list is:
  • 10pF, 22pF, 47pF, 100pF, 220pF, 470pF, 1000pF
  • the caps are connected in parallel, the minimum capacitance equals to 10pF, the maximum capacitance equals to 1869pF.
The inductance list is:
  • 0.05?H, 0.1?H, 0.22?H, 0.45?H, 1.0?H, 2.2?H, 4.4?H
  • the coils are connected in series, the minimum inductance equals to 0.05?H, the maximum inuctance equals to 8,42?H
So, the tuning is performed with these values: 10pF~1869pF, 0.05?H~8,42?H.

Please note, the
"holes" in the shaded areas (shown here) are because the caps' and inds' values deviate from the ideal row of powers of two, (2^0=1, 2^1=2, 2^2=4, 2^3=8, etc). When one winds the coils - he MUST check the actual inductance he gets, simply following the numbers of turns IS NOT ENOUGH!
The capacitors also should be checked with a meter, their values should be obtained by combining two (or three) lesser ones - giving the correct aggregate capacitance in each individual position.

Warm regards,
Tony

What is? your version, Chinese? with oled display or Russian with 16 char x 2lines LCD display?

If I didn¡¯t make a bonehead math error that makes it:

22pf - 4079pf

.1uH - 18.48uH

I don¡¯t but, capacitors are added in parallel and inductors in series. ?

I do see in his (N7DDC) script already mentioned here a list of inductors and caps in a few devices...I am sure the answer is in here after a bit of math and understanding how the C and L are added to the load in this tuner, additive, exclusive and if parallel or series...but it's getting late and I am sure someone already has the answer and could kindly share.

Yes, turned out the micro wasn't getting voltage. Check that first, right at the chip.

Re: Field Testing ATU-10 #ATU-10

Hi, Joshua.?
Thank you, nice job.
ATU-10 requires new his own tuning algorithm.
The old one using in ATU-100 is not working properly there. I will work on it soon.?

Field Testing ATU-10 #ATU-10

ATU-10 Random Wire Testing

Test completed with a Tufteln 9:1 QRP Antenna

Antenna configured with an elevated feed point slopper and counterpoise hanging straight down

Coax RG316 17'

ATU-10 Sourced from newdiytech.com, price was $120.24 shipped to me in GA USA, Ordered June 25, delivered July 8th.

ATU-10 Features

0.91" OLED Display that shows Power, SWR and internal battery remaining.

USB-C Rechargeable LiPo 1.7Ah

Grounding Lug

Bypass Mode

Latching Relays

Input port for communication with IC705 (and potentially others)

7 Inductors, 8 capacitors (let me know if this is not right, clearly 7 inductors, 15 relays...)

Inductor and Capacitance Range -?

ATU-10 with Protection Cover

SWR measured with a RigExpert RigStick 320, Lab599 TX500 and the ATU-10

The test process was to first check the SWR on the antenna with no tuner. SWR values recorded from the TX500 and RigExpert320. Values recorded in the 2 columns under the "No Tuner" section. This was completed for each of the Bands listed in the table rows. SWR values were the lowest in the band range for all recorded numbers.

The second test was with the ATU-10 tuned. I tuned the antenna with the ATU-10 from the tune function on the TX500 and recorded the value on the ATU-10 and the TX500. I then disconnected the radio and checked the SWR with the RigExpert 320 through the ATU-10. These three values are recorded in the "ATU-10 Tuned" columns.

The third test was the same as the previous but after tuning with the Elecraft T1.

These tests were then completed with the same setup with only a different radiator length. See the table name in each for the length.

Test Conclusions

I will keep this brief as the data is self explanatory. The ATU-10 is not a great tuner. Maybe it is just the one I got? The Elecraft T1 is excellent (not the intention of this testing but of course no surprise on the results). The ATU-10 i received from newdiytech.com was not DOA. It reads power level, shows an SWR level, Charges, etc. but it just doesn¡¯t do a good job tuning the antenna. I will have to do some further testing and research on the device and see where this goes.

Other thoughts

Yes, a brief conclusion for sure. I am not very familiar with this ATU and to be honest I didn't have very high expectations. The display with power and SWR reading was very attractive for me as well as the opportunity to offer another protection cover like I make for the T1. One reason I chose newdiytech.com was that they are one of the very few approved vendors for the (tr)uSDX and I have seen several times there they appear to have great customer support. Did I mention the T1 is great? Currently they have shipping time from Elecraft listed as TBD due to ship shortages I believe. The ATU-10 I received from newdiytech.com was not DOA. It reads power level, shows an SWR level, Charges, etc. but it just doesn¡¯t do a good job tuning the antenna. I will have to do some further testing and research on the device and see where this goes.

I have some I got from a seller on Amazon. I made a PDF of them and can send it to you.

I bought the kit. The CPU does not function. It puts out no SDA or SCL for the display. The display does not work either. I tried with another I have. It lights up, but no data. I checked pins 27 and 28. Nothing. I think they forgot to program it.

Hi.
In the ATU-10 assambled, the problem (4 times) is the contacts of legs of relays. Are short legs and is mandatory resolder and chek the continuity on the other side

Al,

Interesting. I have one of the ATU-10s that will sometimes find a tune and sometimes will not. I assumed it was a problem with the hardware and when I opened it noticed the use of glue around the coils, relays, and batteries. That would make replacing a coil or relay difficult to do. So, I haven't pursued trying to figure out what the exact problem is. I'm surprised to learn that you can get your unit to manually tune. That may mean my assumption was incorrect.
